Fresenius Medical Care’s 500,000th Risky Device Delivered
By John Curran
Fresenius Medical Care has faced numerous problems at its kidney dialysis treatment facilities, from letting patients risk GranuFlo heart attack side effects to leaving mold to grow in water treatment rooms. In spite of that, the company recently celebrated a somewhat depressing milestone, as its 500,000th kidney dialysis machine was recently built in Germany.
The company donated it to a local nonprofit, but the organization should be mindful that Fresenius Medical Care might not be forthcoming if anything was going to go wrong. While the company knew that a chemical used in its kidney dialysis devices could cause NaturaLyte cardiac arrest risks, it chose to inform its own centers first, in November 2011. While it is the largest kidney dialysis facility provider in the United States, the fact that Fresenius did not disclose these risks to other centers until March 2012 left thousands of patients (and technicians) unaware of GranuFlo heart attack side effects.
The FDA issued the most stringent recall over the summer, but it may be of little solace to those who lost loved ones because of Fresenius Medical Care choices. Part of the problem with NaturaLyte cardiac arrest side effects is how the chemical is used in kidney dialysis. Specifically, the patient’s blood is treated outside of the body completely. If bicarbonates built up during treatment, the body is receiving the blood without any ability to filter it itself or show evidence of the risks before GranuFlo heart attack conditions begin.
Perhaps more worrisome for kidney dialysis patients is that many other centers use chemicals made by the German company. It is unclear what the response would be from Fresenius Medical Care would be if they found out that another chemical caused problems like those from NaturaLyte heart attack side effects. Past evidence, however is not promising.
