New Actos Bladder Cancer Lawsuit Likely to Be Added to MDL

By John Curran

Actos lawsuitA Texas woman recently filed a claim with the help of her Actos bladder cancer lawsuit attorney in Illinois, but many agree that it is likely to be moved to the Actos multidistrict litigation in West Louisiana. The popular type II diabetes drug has been the subject of so many claims against manufacturer Takeda Pharmaceutical that the multidistrict litigation was set up to help manage all the different claims.

There is abundant scientific evidence indicating that Actos bladder cancer side effects are significant. In fact countries like France and Germany have both banned the medication as a result. In the U.S. on the other hand the Federal Food and Drug Administration only made an announcement last year stating that the risk is about 40% higher than with other drugs. Other studies, including ones submitted in prestigious scientific journals, indicate that the risk could be more than twice that for Actos side effects compared to other drugs.

While developing bladder cancer does not carry the same type of risk as those of related conditions, the Texas woman as well as many others who filed claims with Actos MDL attorneys report that the treatment is painful for it to be removed. Moreover, they allege that they were unaware of the risks for Actos bladder cancer side effects until the FDA’s revised warning.

What is particularly troubling is that the Type 2 diabetes drug may eventually lead to even more Actos side effects. Three manufacturers currently have the rights to produce a generic form of it and have since the summer. In spite of the FDA’s awareness of these Actos bladder cancer risks, more companies will be able to produce a much less expensive version in the spring, making it more accessible to other people who may only be slightly aware of the risks.

The FDA has been slow to mention the risks in spite of studies indicating at the time that Actos was approved that the risk for tumors was well-known and many patients may not have been aware of them.
