Kidney Dialysis Heart Attack Victims Pursue GranuFlo Recall Lawsuits

By Sarah Pierce

GranuFlo heart attackGranuFlo and NaturaLyte are popular dialysis products used to treat hundreds of thousands of patients with kidney failure. However, fears of NaturaLyte and GranuFlo heart attack, death and other serious side effects have led to a Class I recall of the products — the most serious type of recall reserved only for products that could be deadly.

Kidney failure patients who were administered GranuFlo or NaturaLyte during hemodialysis treatment were put at risk for serious, undisclosed side effects. As a result, victims of GranuFlo heart attack, or family members of victims who died of NaturaLyte heart attack, can pursue legal compensation for their injuries and losses.

GranuFlo Heart Attacks Responsible for Hundreds of Deaths

In an internal memo dated November 2011, GranuFlo/NaturaLyte manufacturer Fresenius Medical Care noted that as many as 941 kidney dialysis patients had died in 2010 alone following incorrect dosages of GranuFlo and NaturaLyte at Fresenius medical clinics. These deaths were caused by heart attack, cardiopulmonary arrest, cardiac arrhythmia, and other heart problems.

The reason behind these GranuFlo heart attacks is that the solution contains ingredients that convert to bicarbonate when mixed with other substances, which is necessary for cleaning waste from the blood during kidney dialysis treatment. The problem, doctors say, is that Fresenius dialysis products contain a higher level of bicarbonate than other dialysis products, which can lead to a bicarbonate overdose. High levels of bicarbonate can lead to a GranuFlo heart attack or even death in some hemodialysis patients.

Studies show that kidney failure patients using GranuFlo or NaturaLyte have a six-fold higher risk of suffering a dialysis heart attack. This risk is even greater for patients with acute kidney failure or those who already have elevated pre-dialysis bicarbonate levels.

Other Side Effects of GranuFlo Prompt Recall

In addition to the risk of heart attack, a number of other GranuFlo/NaturaLyte side effects prompted the FDA recall of the Fresenius dialysis products.

One of the most common GranuFlo side effects reported is metabolic alkalosis, which includes symptoms of low blood pressure, low blood oxygen and irregular heartbeat. GranuFlo metabolic alkalosis is a risk factor for heart attack, stroke and death.

Legal Help for Kidney Dialysis Heart Attack Victims

If you or a loved one suffered a heart attack, cardiopulmonary arrest, stroke or cardiac event following hemodialysis treatment, you may be entitled to compensation from Fresenius Medical Care for negligently manufacturing and distributing a dangerous product. A Fresenius lawsuit attorney can provide a free evaluation of your claims to determine if you have a case to seek compensation through a GranuFlo recall lawsuit, GranuFlo heart attack lawsuit or Fresenius Medical Care class action lawsuit settlement.
