New Study Links Antidepressants to Premature Birth & Infant Seizure

By Matt O’Donnell

antidepressant birth defectsA new study suggests moms-to-be who use antidepressants during pregnancy are more likely to go into premature labor or have their baby suffer a seizure soon after birth. The findings, reported in the American Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology, add to evidence presented in hundreds of antidepressant birth defect lawsuits filed against the makers of Paxil, Zoloft, Prozac, Celexa, Lexapro and other SSRI antidepressants.
According to the antidepressant pregnancy study, women who continue taking antidepressants into their second trimester double their chance of going into premature labor. Overall, almost 27% of women in the study group went into early labor, with 14% actually delivering premature babies. The study also found that women who were on an SSRI antidepressant such as fluoxetine (Prozac), sertraline (Zoloft), citalopram (Celexa) and paroxetine (Paxil) increased the risk of newborn seizure. The study backs up claims made in Zoloft, Paxil and other SSRI antidepressant birth defect lawsuits filed across the country seeking compensation from drug makers for failing to warn mothers about the risk of serious birth defects caused by taking SSRI antidepressants during pregnancy.

Antidepressant Birth Defects
Antidepressant birth defect lawsuits list numerous side effects allegedly caused by Paxil, Zoloft, Prozac, Lexapro, Celexa and other SSRI antidepressants. These side effects include:
* congenital heart defects
* Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension (PPHN)
* atrial septal defects (ASD)
* ventricular septal defects (VSD)
* abdominal birth defects or abdominal hernia (omphalocele)
* cranial birth defects (craniosynotosis)
* aorta coarctation
* hypoplastic right or left heart syndrome
* transposition of the great arteries (TGA)
* tetralogy of fallot (TOF)/cyanosis
* spina bifida
* Autism Spectrum Disorder
* club feet

The antidepressant birth defects listed above may be caused by many different medications (not just SSRI antidepressant drugs like Zoloft and Paxil) if taken while pregnant and only an SSRI birth defect attorney and a doctor can determine if one of the prescribed medications taken during pregnancy could be responsible for birth defects. Consulting with an antidepressant birth defect lawyer can help you determine the best course of action for seeking compensation, whether that means filing an individual antidepressant birth defect lawsuit, a Paxil or Zoloft birth defect class action lawsuit, or joining a multidistrict litigation (MDL).

Antidepressant Birth Defect Multidistrict Litigation (MDL)
A multidistrict litigation such as Zoloft birth defect MDL or Paxil birth defect MDL puts all of the lawsuits filed in the MDL court under the purview of one judge and a panel of plaintiff and defense attorneys. This can speed up the litigation process and allow hundreds, if not thousands, of Zoloft birth defect lawsuits or Paxil birth defect lawsuits to be litigated more efficiently, which may lead to a faster lawsuit settlement. Some parents have opted to join a Zoloft birth defect class action lawsuit, which is currently being litigated. A Zoloft birth defect class action lawsuit may not be in the best interest of everyone, though. A Zoloft birth defect class action settlement could result in smaller payouts for victims of Zoloft birth defects. It’s important that if your child was born with a birth defect you speak with a qualified SSRI birth defect attorney to determine what is best for you. This may be filing an individual Zoloft lawsuit against Pfizer, joining the Zoloft birth defect lawsuit MDL or filing a Zoloft birth defect class action lawsuit. If your baby was born with a birth defect and you were taking Zoloft, another antidepressant SSRI drug like Paxil, or any another SSRI drug, you should speak with an experienced Antidepressant Birth Defect attorney
If you would like more information about filing an antidepressant birth defect class action lawsuit, you would like to contact an SSRI birth defect attorney, or would like to file an individual SSRI birth defect lawsuit, just go to the Zoloft Birth Defect Class Action Lawsuit Investigation page. You can submit your information to attorneys who specialize in antidepressant-related birth defect lawsuits, and other SSRI antidepressant drug birth defect lawsuits, that are actively investigating all claims regarding birth defects like Craniosynostosis, Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension (PPHN), Atrial Septal Defects (ASD), ventricular septal defects (VSD), abdominal birth defects (omphalocele), cranial birth defects (craniosynotosis), aorta coarctation, hypoplastic right or left heart syndrome, transposition of the great arteries (TGA), tetralogy of fallot (TOF), spina bifida, Autism, club feet and other problems which may be attributed to Zoloft or another anti-depressant (SSRI) drug taken while pregnant. It the drug makers’ responsibility to properly warn users of their drugs of the possibility of severe birth defects, and if you feel you were not warned of the risk of birth defects an attorney may be able to help.
