Actos, the Highest Grossing Diabetes Drug, Causes Bladder Cancer?
By Scott Hardy
Actos (pioglitazone) continued to be a strong performer for Takeda Pharmaceuticals in 2011 bringing in billions of dollars to the drug giant. Lawsuits alleging that Actos causes bladder cancer started hitting the courts last year which may have been a factor in causing Actos to drop from $3.5 billion in sales in 2010 to $3.4 billion in 2011 (according to IMS Health.) As more consumers are alerted to the possible danger of taking Actos many may have decided to switch to a different treatment option for their Type-2 Diabetes.
Actos (pioglitazone) has brought in billions of dollars in revenue for Takeda Pharmaceuticals and 2011 is the first year that sales not only stopped growing, but, decreased significantly. Actos jumped from $2.9 billion in sales in 2007 to last year’s $3.4 billion but revenue may continue to decline in 2012 as more studies show that repeated exposure to Actos may result in bladder tumors and cancer.
Two studies so far have shown that diabetics who took Actos more a year or more had an increased risk of a heart attack and/or up to a 40% increase of getting cancerous bladder tumors. In fact, the FDA issued a statement in 2010 acknowledging the potential increased risk of bladder cancer after taking Actos and stating that “further study is required.” The French Agency for the Safety of Health Products decided that the studies were proof enough of bladder cancer deaths due to Actos and pulled Actos off the shelves in France on June 9th, 2011. Attorneys around the world are now filing lawsuits in their respective countries connecting extended use of Actos to bladder cancer. Multiple Actos class action lawsuits have also been filed in the US and are being investigated in the UK and other countries where class actions are allowed to be filed.
