front-loading washer class action lawsuit

A class action lawsuit has been filed against BSH Home Appliances Corporation, alleging that the company marketed, advertised and sold Bosch and Siemens brand 27” front-loading automatic clothes washing machines that are susceptible to mold and/or bacteria growth, which can cause foul odors. If you purchased a Bosch or Siemens 27” front-loading washing machine, you may be eligible for a cash payment from the BSH class action settlement.

The Bosch/Siemens washing machine class action lawsuit alleges that the front-loading washing machines (a) do not effectively clean themselves or work as advertised; (b) cause washed clothes to stink; and (c) develop mold, bacteria and/or other biofilm, which can lead to foul odors. The plaintiffs allege they paid more than they would have if they had known the front-loading washing machines required extraordinary upkeep to prevent the bad odors from developing. The washing machine class action lawsuit alleges BSH breached warranties and violated various state laws.

BSH denies that its front-loading washing machines are defective or are prone to developing mold, bacteria and/or other biofilms. Further, the company alleges that the recommended maintenance for the washing machines is not extraordinary and that it is effective at preventing mold, bacteria, biofilm and/or foul odors from developing.

On Dec. 12, 2014, plaintiffs filed a motion with the court, seeking preliminary approval of the BSH moldy washer settlement.

  1. Vadine Ostlind says:

I just found out about the class action suit and it is August 29, 2018. I was looking because somebody else had a problem with a frontload washer, not a bosch. I was never notified and my daughter has been complaining about a foul smell for months.

  2. Viki Rossi says:

Here it is July 2017 and I just stumbled across this mold info. Mine stinks to high heaven, even with the bleach and door open treatment.
Should be a law that all defects and law suits are passed on to customers.

  3. Stacy says:

I wasn’t notified, either. I have been able to control the door gasket mold by soaking paper towels in bleach, then sticking them to the moldy parts and letting it soak overnight. Which I shouldn’t have to do, but there you go. I looked into a new gasket before I came across the bleach thing, would have been $80 plus having it installed, so $55 is kind of a joke of a fix. How did this class action miss so many buyers? Plus, after chasing down an error code, I discovered that the horrible smell I thought was coming from a nearby floor drain is actually coming from my machine. Maybe there will be a class action over that? Of course if there is, I apparently won’t be informed…

  4. Eric Sievers says:

I was never notified about this issue. Had warranty work done on it also for other issues. WHY was I not notified?

    1. Eric Sievers says:

Should be able to sue them for not contacting me.

  5. Frances Madison says:

I HATE this machine. I bought the front-loading Siemens thinking I was getting a machine for large loads of towels and one in which I could wash 3 king sheets at once. Boy was I wrong! I’m 75 years old and am up and down from the second floor to the basement 3-4 times more than I anticipated during my wash days to complete doing my laundry. I, too, had the mold and smell problem, but I figured out early on that leaving the door open would help. But we shouldn’t have to do this. I don’t want a machine that requires me to leave the door open. If this problem could not have been solved by the engineers, these machines should never have been manufactured for an unsuspecting public. I’m on the verge of trashing mine, taking the monetary hit, and buying a top-loader. I gave my daughter my old Maytag, and I’m extremely envious every time I go for a visit. It’s 22 years old and is still working great–no such problems as those I’m experiencing.

  6. Dave says:

I learned shortly after purchasing this washer (my 1st front load washer) that if you leave the door cracked open (leave a small towel hanging on the door) that you won’t have a stinking gym locker smell. Most of the smell comes from the front seal. It only smells musty when my kids forget to put the towel on the door. I bought my machine 10 years ago. Great machine!
My brother in-law has a Whirlpool which has the same issue. The front seal was covered in dirt and mold (they never cracked the door open). We cleaned and beached the old seal and now it’s fine.

You have to vent it or you will continue to have the same issue.

    1. Cher Marie says:

I have had issues for years and no one notified me, although I bought an extended warranty. I have always left the door wide open, not just a crack, and still have odors and smelly clothes. I’ve even used the detergent to “wash the washer” , didn’t help. If I sent in all the paperwork for warranty, they had my info and I should have been notified. Also, I don’t normally use any type of detergent, I use washer balls so it can’t be caused by soap.

    2. Maxine says:

I read your suggestion on how to prevent mold on the washer, and just wanted clarification on how/where to put the small towel?

  7. Karl says:

Unfortunate – I never received notice of this lawsuit and now am told the deadline to file a claim has passed. Any suggestions on how to file a claim?

  8. Russell Bozard says:

I have a Bosch washer with mold problems and was never notified about the lawsuit. What to do now? $55. is a joke! Maybe a separate suit?

    1. Eric Sievers says:

I was never notified either… This sucks. Have to some research about this.

  9. Sven says:

I received my $55 check in the mail yesterday. The washer still works and is still moldy.

  10. Wilyum says:

It would be nice to think that the appeals process would lead to a sum larger than a silly $55.00. I have just found out about this lawsuit and I am not sure if it can even apply to me though I have one of the awful washers. Is Germany trying to get revenge for WW2? I have been severely disappointed in a number of other Bosch products. Could be that Bosch management needs their feet held to the fire because I have used other German products which were excellent.
