A Louisiana family joined the growing Xarelto bleeding multidistrict litigation after losing their loved one to a cerebral bleeding event blamed on the drug.

According to plantiff Aquantae C., who filed the Xarelto lawsuit on behalf herself and the estate of Regina N., Regina began taking Xarelto in January 2014 and as a direct result suffered from internal bleeding and a mini-stroke in August 2014. The family claims Regina died the following month due to the injuries she sustained from the Xarelto bleeding side effects.

The family filed the Xarelto wrongful death lawsuit against Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Inc., Johnson & Johnson, and Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals, Inc.

The family alleges that the manufacturers of Xarelto failed to warn patients that they could risk their lives by taking the medication. The lawsuit claims the defendants’ conduct was “extreme and outrageous” for allegedly intentionally concealing safety concerns from the public.

According to the Xarelto bleeding lawsuit the “defendants made conscious decisions not to redesign, re-label, warn or inform the unsuspecting consuming public.”

The plaintiff believes that the conduct of the manufacturers deserves an award of punitive damages.

The Estate of Regina N. is seeking more than $75,000 to help pay for the medical and nursing treatments, hospitalization costs, funeral and burial expenses and the mental anguish suffered by her surviving family members.

Xarelto Internal Bleeding Complications

Approved by the FDA in 2011, Xarelto quickly became a popular blood clot treatment for atrial fibrillation patients and was commonly prescribed to patients after hip or knee surgery. Xarelto manufacturers promoted the medication through a direct-to-consumer advertising designed to encourage patients to ask their doctors about being prescribed the anticoagulant.

The ad campaign seemed to work as Xarelto manufacturers tout that the medication is now the top blood thinner in its class with its 11 million prescriptions in the U.S. alone.

However, it only took a few months of being on the market when the FDA began receiving adverse reports from consumers claiming Xarelto caused serious internal bleeding complications.

In the years since its release, Xarelto has been named in thousands of adverse reports, hundreds of those claiming the drug caused a hemorrhage-related death.

Xarelto Side Effects

Xarelto was initially promoted as a more convenient blood thinner when compared to Warfarin (Coumadin), as manufacturers assured consumers that the medication required no regular blood testing or carried any dietary restrictions. However, most Xarelto patients fling lawsuits claim they were unaware that there was no antidote should a bleeding event occur.

Coumadin patients can be given a dose of vitamin k to get bleeding under control, but Xarelto consumers are forced to undergo multiple blood transfusions and lengthy hospital stays as the only known way to stop the internal bleeding is to get the drug out of the system.

According to recent studies, Xarelto consumers have double the risk of experiencing gastrointestinal bleeding when compared to Warfarin users.

The Xarelto Bleeding MDL is In re: Xarelto (Rivaroxaban) Products Liability Litigation, Case No. 2:15-cv-03396-EEF-MBN in MDL No. 2592, in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana.
