Zithromax (or azithromycin), manufactured by the pharmaceutical company Pfizer, is a popular antibiotic for bacterial infections. It is one of the most widely prescribed drugs today.
Â
However, Zithromax has also been tied to some very serious side effects including liver damage and failure.
Zithromax was approved in 1991, and in 2001, Pfizer updated the label to include the drug’s potential to cause liver damage. Zithromax is a very strong antibiotic, and is eliminated from the body by way of the liver, which makes the potential for liver damage or liver failure higher than usual.
Pfizer has received reports of liver damage associated with Zithromax since 1996, just one year after Zithromax was approved for use in children.
After several years of these kinds of reports, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) forced Pfizer to warn the public about these severe Zithromax side effects.
Drug makers like Pfizer have a legal responsibility to make medical professionals and consumers aware of the risks their products hold. In 2012, Pfizer received a warning from the FDA for a Zithromax brochure which did not adequately disclose the drug’s risks, minimizing and omitting risks while simultaneously claiming to treat conditions the drug had not been approved to treat.
If left untreated too long, Zithromax side effects can cause enough damage to the liver that the liver actually fails. In these cases, a patient’s only option is to undergo a liver transplant.
However, Zithromax side effects can generally be managed if they are discovered promptly Zithromax is stopped early enough. Because of the importance of catching these side effects early on, it is essential that people taking Zithromax are aware of the symptoms of liver damage and failure. These symptoms include:
- jaundice (yellowing of the eyes and skin)
- abdominal pain
- nausea
- vomiting
- fever
- severe fatigue
- dark urine
- elevated liver enzyme levels
If you or someone you know has suffered liver damage or liver failure after using Zithromax, you may be able to file a Zithromax lawsuit.
