Fisher Price Issues Massive Toy Recall
By Mike Holter

Fisher-Price
Fisher-Price has issued a recall of 11 million units of children’s toys, making it one of the largest toy recalls in history. The Fisher-Price recall covers four different types of products with 46 different model numbers that contain parts that have either cut children or caused them to choke.

Parents who own a Fisher-Price tricycle, high chair, Little People Wheelies Stand n’ Play Rampway or one of the toy maker’s seven infant toys that come attached with an inflatable ball should check the product’s model number here (for tricycles), here (for high chairs), here (for Stand n’ Play Rampway) and here (for inflatable balls) to see if they’re affected by the recall. The recalled Fisher-Price tricycles contain a protruding part that has cut at least 10 children, and there have been at least 14 reports of children cutting their legs on the recalled high chairs — seven of whom required stitches because of the severity of the cuts. The recalled inflatable ball toys and Rampway have removable parts that pose choking hazards to children.

The massive 2010 Fisher-Price recall is a major blow to Mattel, Inc., which acquired the toy maker in 1997 and made Fisher-Price the umbrella brand over Mattel’s infant and preschool lines. Just three years ago, the company recalled over 18 million Mattel and Fisher-Price toys that contained excessive levels of lead, lead paint or magnets that could become loose and swallowed by children. The 2007 Mattel lead toy recall led to a class action lawsuit and settlement that awarded parents $25 to $45, depending on how many recalled toys they purchased.

No class action lawsuit has been filed yet against Mattel and Fisher-Price over the company’s latest toy recall, but you can probably expect to hear about one soon. We’ll keep you posted if any class action arises from the 2010 Fisher-Price recall.
