A Lipitor lawsuit was filed by an Ohio resident who claims the popular cholesterol medication caused the development of type-2 diabetes.
Plaintiff Harriet T. has added another Lipitor diabetes lawsuit to the growing multi district litigation (MDL) accusing Pfizer Inc. of failing to warn that Lipitor side effects could include diabetes.
Harriet is hoping to join one of the more than 2,300 Lipitor lawsuits currently moving through the federal court system in South Carolina.
All of the pending Lipitor lawsuits claim that drug manufacturer Pfizer not only hid the potential side effect from consumers but also did not adequately change their warning label as mandated by the FDA to include the diabetic risk.
The Lipitor diabetes lawsuit alleges that plaintiff Harriet has suffered from permanent physical and emotional injuries due to developing type-2 diabetes.
Harriet claims that she has “suffered grievous bodily injury and consequently economic and other losses, including but not limited to, pain and suffering, emotional distress and loss of enjoyment of life.”
She is suing Pfizer for negligence, fraud and misrepresentation.
Lipitor Diabetes Side Effect Risks
Numerous studies have linked the increased risk of developing type-2 diabetes to the cholesterol medication Lipitor.
In 2012, a study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine found that women between the ages of 50-79, who were Lipitor consumers, had a nearly 50 percent greater chance of developing type-2 diabetes when compared to non-users.
Lipitor diabetes symptoms include:
- Unexplained weight loss
- Slow-healing sores or frequent infections
- Fatigue
- Increased hunger (especially after eating)
- Blurred vision
- Dry mouth
- Headaches
- Areas of darkened skin
- Frequent urination
- Increased thirst
International Lipitor studies have found similar connections to diabetes. In a 2014 Canadian Lipitor study, patients taking the cholesterol medication were found to have a 15 percent increased risk of developing diabetes within the first two-years of treatment.
A study performed by Finland researchers a few months ago found that Lipitor consumers increased their risk of a type-2 diabetes side effect by 50 percent.
By 2012, the FDA required Pfizer to include a Lipitor diabetes risk on the medication’s warning label. However, many consumers believe the wording wasn’t strong enough, which has prompted subsequent Lipitor lawsuits to be filed.
Lipitor Type-2 Diabetes Lawsuits
Thousands of Lipitor lawsuits have been filed accusing Pfizer of hiding the risk of type-2 diabetes linked to the cholesterol medication while it over-marketed the product. Sometimes Lipitor plaintiffs claim to develop type-2 diabetes over the course of a few years, while others report it only took a few months.
