Woman suffering from essure crampsThousands of women have had the Essure birth control device implanted and report suffering  side effects including extreme bloating, pain, and even pregnancy. Most women are forced to have a full hysterectomy to end the everyday pain of having Essure implanted.

Several Houston women recently shared their experiences with the local NBC affiliate after having the Essure coils implanted into their fallopian tubes as a permanent birth control.

“I have constant pain. It feels like there’s barbed wire in my abdomen,” one woman said.

“One tube had migrated and was in my abdomen,” another woman said.

Some of these women who were interviewed by Houston’s Channel 2 opted to have complete hysterectomies in order to stop the Essure complications and remove the contraceptive devices. Becauses of their Essure complications and those voiced by countless other women across the United States through social media, these women are sternly cautioning other women contemplating the permanent birth control device that it may cost them their health.

However, there are still proponents of the Essure device who doubt it is the actual contraceptive device that is causing patients pain. One gynecologist claims the Essure device may not be properly placed and Essure coil placement is crucial in order to prevent the device from migrating and causing these severe complications.

What is the Problem With Essure?

The Essure device is a small flexible coil that is inserted into the fallopian tube through the cervix and uterus and permanently blocks the fallopian tube about three months after insertion. The non hormonal birth control device is placed in each fallopian tube in a physician’s office.

Bayer purchased the device when it acquired Conceptus, the original marketer of the device, in 2013.

Rather than suffering the pain and hospitalization of a surgical procedure, women could now have a non hormonal birth control device implanted in their fallopian tubes that would trigger the formation of scar tissue. That tissue would cause a blockage in the tubes and, from that point, full sterilization would supposedly be achieved. The procedure could be done on an outpatient basis in less than an hour.

It didn’t take long for reports of Essure problems to start. Complaints of pain, migration of the device, bleeding, and other negative Essure side effects began pouring in and, eventually, injured women began filing Essure lawsuits.

FDA Investigates Complaints About Essure

The FDA approved Essure in 2002 after a fast-track review process, a form of approval that exempts a manufacturer from liability from personal injury claims. However, some women have begun to challenge this exemption in the courts.

The FDA has collected over 4,000 adverse effects reports over Essure complications, including organ perforation, device migration out of the fallopian tubes, and pain. Prompted by the multitude of complaints and a petition filed on behalf of hundreds of victims, like the Houston women, who complained of adverse Essure events, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) opened an investigation into the Essure permanent birth control device.

The FDA is investigating allegations that Bayer, the manufacturer of Essure:

  • Used fradulent clinical trial data
  • Failed to report adverse events
  • Deceived the public and the FDA about the safety and efficacy of Essure
  • Used defective materials in manufacturing

If you, or a loved one, had Essure coils implanted and suffered adverse side effects, you may be entitled to compensatory damages.

In general, Essure lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.
