A recent study conducted by Houston Methodist and Stanford University researchers found proton pump inhibitors (medicine for acid reflux), such as Nexium, to be linked to an increased risk of myocardial infarction. Nexium is a capsule taken by mouth and is used to relieve heartburn by reducing the amount of acid the stomach creates.
The results of this study, performed by collecting data on Nexium use in the general population and published in the journal PLOS One, found that users of Nexium and other acid reflux medications had a 16 to 21 percent increased risk of a myocardial infarction, more commonly known as a heart attack.
Due to the popularity of acid reflux medications, researchers are concerned about the associated heart attack risks. Nexium and other acid reflux medications are estimated to generate roughly $14 billion in sales each year, making them one of the most widely used classes of medication. These acid reflux relief drugs can be obtained through a prescription or bought over-the-counter.
What is Nexium?
Nexium (esomeprazole), manufactured by AstraZeneca, is indicated by the FDA for use in treating gastroesophageal reflux (GERD), which is a condition that causes the stomach to create too much stomach acid, resulting in heartburn and possible injury of the esophagus. Nexium tablets are taken once or twice a day, an hour before a meal, and are available over the counter or through a prescription.
Nexium Increases Risk of Heart Attack
In the recent study, researchers gathered data on 2.9 million individuals treated for GERD between the years 1994 and 2012. The results of this study were taken from a population of individuals with GERD who were at least 18 years of age. The studied population was divided into two groups — those treated with proton pump inhibitors (acid reflux medications), and those who were treated with H2-blockers. H2-blockers are a common medication used to treat ulcers and heartburn.
The study results found that the use of prescription proton pump inhibitors, such as Nexium, is associated with an increased risk of a myocardial infarction (heart attack). In individuals taking these drugs, the risk of heart attack is increased by 16 to 21 percent. In comparison, there was no association between the use of H2-blockers and an increased risk of heart attack.
Researchers who carried out the study are concerned about the effects of proton pump inhibitor acid reflux medications such as Nexium, and suggest additional research in order to get a better picture of these Nexium heart attack risks.
In general, acid reflux medication lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.
