testosterone gel lawsuitA recently filed low-t drug lawsuit alleges that the testosterone gel AndroGel is unsafe and consumers who use the product are at an increased risk for blood clots, stroke, heart attack and other adverse side effects.

Pennsylvania resident Melville H. has filed a low-t drug lawsuit against AbbVie and Abbott Laboratories for misrepresenting AndroGel, a prescription product used for daily testosterone replacement therapy, as a safe and effective treatment for males who have low or no testosterone. Melville claims in the Androgel low-t drug lawsuit that the drug causes serious medical problems, like the intracranial hemorrhage (or brain bleeding) he suffered as a result of using AndroGel to treat his low testosterone.

Low-T Therapy Risks

Low-T therapy drugs like AndroGel are designed to treat low testosterone levels associated with a condition known as hypogonadism, which is characterized by diminished functional activities of the testes. However, some men are being prescribed low-t therapy to combat the decreased levels of testosterone associated with the natural aging process, putting them at unnecessary risk for potentially life-threatening testosterone side effects.

According to two studies published in November 2013 and January 2014, AndroGel and other low-T therapy treatments may increase the risk of heart attack, stroke, and death for older men with pre-existing heart conditions, younger men with heart disease, and men over 65 with no prior heart conditions.

Low-T Drug MDL

Androgel and other low-t therapy drugs have been extremely profitable for AbbVie and other low-t therapy manufacturers. However, many men taking the low-t therapy have been faced with side effects including heart attack, stroke, pulmonary embolism, and deep vein thrombosis.

Some of these men have filed low-t drug lawsuits, alleging that testosterone therapy manufacturers failed to adequately warn consumers about the dangerous testosterone side effects. The low-t lawsuits also allege that the drugs’ manufacturers wrongly marketed their testosterone products as safe and effective treatments for lowered sex drive, fatigue, and other age-related symptoms, even though they were never approved for this use.

Due to the similarity of low-t drug lawsuit allegations, a low-t drug MDL (multidistrict litigation) was created in June 2014 to consolidated these lawsuits in one court before one judge.

The Low-t Drug MDL is In re: Testosterone Replacement Therapy Product Liability Litigation, MDL No. 2545, in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois.
