Steiner Yankee Stadium Class Action Settlement
By Sarah Pierce

Yankee StadiumAngry fans who paid thousands of dollars to buy “authentic” and “unrefurbished” seats from the old Yankee Stadium — only to receive seats that were generic and refurbished — may not get the unmarred memorabilia they were hoping for, but at least they can get their money back in a recent class action lawsuit settlement.

According to the class action lawsuit documents, lead plaintiff John Lefkus paid $2,000 to own the specific seats where he and his sons cheered on their team for 23 seasons. Steiner Sports, the company handling the sale of memorabilia from the old Yankee Stadium, promised authentic and unrefurbished seats, but Lefkus’ cherished seats sported a new paint job that didn’t match the original color and completely new armrests. Lefkus filed a class action lawsuit against Steiner Sports in March 2010 for $5 million, claiming Steiner made misleading statements about the authenticity of the Yankee Stadium seats and “did not adequately or fully disclose that the seats had been subject to disassembly, reassembled with new hardware, and that the arm rests on such seats had been stripped and repainted.”

If you purchased Yankee Stadium Seat Pairs from Stadium Memorabilia, LLC; Steiner Sports Memorabilia, Inc.; and/or Steiner Sports Marketing, Inc. or any related persons or entities during the period from May 1, 2009 through August 15, 2009, you are included in this class action lawsuit settlement. You have two options under this settlement:

(1) Receive a full refund. You’ll be able to return your Seat Pair for a full refund (including reimbursement for all taxes, shipping and handling charges) within 90 days after the settlement is finalized. Take note that Steiner will have the to right to refuse to provide a refund if the returned seats are damaged beyond normal wear and tear or had pre-existing damage before the seats were sold.

(2) Receive a $65.00 or $95.00 coupon. If you choose not to return your seats for a full refund, you can submit a valid proof of claim to receive a coupon toward the purchase of any good sold by Steiner. The value of the coupon will be $65.00 if you purchased a non-specific Seat Pair, or $95.00 if you purchased a specific Seat Pair. Coupons will be valid for one year following the effective date of the class action lawsuit settlement.

All claim forms must be postmarked on or before December 21, 2010. The final settlement hearing will be held September 22, 2010. More information on the Steiner Yankee Seat Class Action Lawsuit Settlement, including a copy of a claim form, can be found here.
