testosterone-sign-handAn Alabama man has added another complaint to the ongoing testosterone product multidistrict litigation after suffering from a stroke allegedly caused by the low-t medications he was taking.

Plaintiff Kevin L. of Alabama is suing the makers of AndroGel, Axiron, and Depo-Testosterone for failing to adequately warn consumers of the stroke risks associated with using testosterone replacement therapy.

The plaintiff claims he used these testosterone products between January 2006 and October 2013 and experienced a stroke in June 2013. The low-T drug lawsuit accuses drug manufacturers AbbVie Inc., Abbott Laboratories, Unimed Pharmaceuticals, LLC, Eli Lilly and Company, Lilly USA, LLC, Acrux Limited, Acrux DDS Pty Ltd., Pfizer, Inc. and Pharmacia & Upjohn Company Inc. of design defects, negligent misrepresentation and fraud.

Testosterone Product Industry

Low-T therapy products are marketed to men as a way to increase sex drive and build muscle mass. Over the last decade, the amount of U.S. men who use a low testosterone treatment has tripled. Now, more than five million American men use testosterone therapy in the form of testosterone cream, testosterone gel, testosterone patch or testosterone injections.

Besides low sex drive and loss of muscle mass, other low testosterone symptoms include hair loss, fatigue, mood changes, body fat increase and difficulty achieving erections.

However, there are some in the medical community who believe that having low testosterone is part of the aging process and using hormone therapy may expose men to health risks that could have been avoided.

Low-T Drug Studies

In a study at Harvard, researchers analyzed more than 50,000 men taking a form of low testosterone treatment and found that when compared to non-users, those taking a low-T drug had an increased risk for having a cardiac event.

In another low-T drug study published by the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) researchers followed nearly 9,000 men using testosterone therapy and found that users had a 30 percent greater risk of stroke, heart attack and even death.

Low-T medication studies like these have prompted thousands of men to file lawsuits alleging that they were unaware of the serious side effect risks of taking a testosterone product.

Testosterone Product Lawsuits

The number of testosterone product lawsuits continues to grow throughout the U.S. There are some plaintiffs who claim that drug manufacturers intentionally tried to convince men that low testosterone is a medical condition that requires treatment when it’s simply a part of the natural aging process.

In general, plaintiffs allege that low-T drug makers failed to include the increased risk of strokes or heart attacks as a possible side effect of taking a testosterone product. Some low-T drug lawsuits accuse pharmaceutical companies of paying kickbacks to doctors who prescribed testosterone products.

The Testosterone Product MDL is In re: Testosterone Replacement Therapy Products Liability Litigation, Case No. 1:15-cv-04329 in MDL No. 2545, in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois.
