Claim up to $225 in the Toshiba Satellite Broken Hinge Class Action Settlement

By Sarah Pierce

Do you own a Toshiba Satellite Laptop that has (or had) a broken hinge? You may be eligible for a cash reimbursement and other credits for the repair of your laptop under a class action settlement.

The Toshiba Satellite Broken Hinge Class Action Settlement (which we break down here) resolves a lawsuit that claims certain models of Toshiba Satellite laptops have manufacturing defects that make the plastic housing surrounding the hinges, and the hinges themselves, prone to cracking. The class action settlement provides up to $225 for each repair made to fix the broken hinges. Other qualifying owners will be eligible to receive a cash payment of $50 or a $150 credit voucher for future purchases at Toshiba Direct.

If you purchased or leased a new Toshiba Satellite Notebook between April 1, 2000 and March 12, 2010 that has the following model numbers, you are eligible:

I have a Toshiba Satellite C650D. I believe it was bought on Dec 2014 or 2015. It seemed to be a nice grooved plastic case but after a year the hinge on the right cracked and then about 6 months later the left hinge broke. I managed to fix it with some super glue but that lasted 6 months. So it sat in a drawer for a few years with no use and of course needed updates which was hard to do because I was afraid if opened it would crack the main board and then we just have a piece of junk. It seems like the engineers at Toshiba could figure something out or a fix to the hinge problem. Please keep me informed. The more time that goes on the more outdated this laptop becomes!!

Have a toshiba satellite P875-S7310. Noticed my left hinge broke the plastic case around the left corner. Now my right hinge has movement too. When I open and close it tries to spread the case halves apart because the metal hinges are so ridiculously tight!! Now I need to replace the lower case half and will loosen the tension on the hinges while I am at it. Should be a factory recall for this nonsense!

Hello! I am currently fixing my dad’s Toshiba Satellite p870. Both hinges are broken. I managed to “fix” it roughly by soldering Mecano game parts on the broken parts. Even if mine were not made of plastic as stated above, they are still crap an broke easily.
