lawsuit-risperdal-breastsSeveral lawsuits have been filed against the manufacturers of Risperdal for allegedly failing to warn about serious risks associated with using the medication. Product liability attorneys are looking for potential plaintiffs to bring Risperdal lawsuits against Johnson & Johnson.

Risperdal, generically known as risperidone, is a popular antipsychotic drug manufactured by Johnson & Johnson. In 2006 the medication was approved to treat children who were diagnosed with autism and bipolar disorder.

Medical researchers believe Risperdal works by rebalancing dopamine and serotonin levels in the brain to improve mood, thinking, and behavior. Risperdal is also prescribed to adults who suffer from schizophrenia.

Adverse Side Effects of Risperdal

Hundreds of lawsuits have been filed against Johnson & Johnson alleging that Risperdal causes male breast growth in young males who are taking the medication. Male breast growth, also known as gynecomastia or man boobs, is an embarrassing condition that often requires surgery to correct.

Although medical researchers are unsure of the exact cause for male breast growth in adolescent Risperdal users, it is alleged that the medication increases levels of the hormone prolactin. Prolactin is the hormone that stimulates breast growth in young women during puberty.

Side effects associated with adolescent males using Risperdal include, male breast growth, painful breasts, nipple pain, and nipple discharge.

Johnson & Johnson was accused by the federal government with concealing the side effects of Risperdal and improperly promoting the medication to children and adults with disabilities. The company has paid billions of dollars in fines and settlements.

The first private Risperdal lawsuit was brought in 2012 by a 21-year-old plaintiff. The lawsuit settled out of court.

Awards and settlements from these lawsuits will help victims pay both past and future medical bills as well as compensate them for the pain and suffering they were forced to endure. Male breast growth during a boy’s adolescent years can be extremely traumatizing and the plaintiffs often allege psychological trauma.
