diabetes-sign-lipitorA Lipitor diabetes lawsuit was filed by a Florida woman who alleges the Pfizer Inc. cholesterol-lowering medication caused her to develop type-2 diabetes.

Plaintiff Gracie M. began taking Lipitor in 1997, according to her Lipitor diabetes lawsuit.

A year after she started her Lipitor prescription, she was diagnosed with type-2 diabetes, the Lipitor lawsuit says. Because of that Gracie has had to undergo frequent blood tests, blood-sugar tests, adhere to a strict diabetic diet, and regularly see her doctor.

She stopped taking Lipitor in December 2001. After learning of concerns about Lipitor raised by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 2012, Gracie filed her Lipitor lawsuit against Pfizer. The Lipitor lawsuit alleges Pfizer was responsible for warning her and other Lipitor patients of the potential of developing diabetes.

The Lipitor diabetes lawsuit accuses Pfizer of negligence, false advertising, concealing information, and misrepresenting a product.

This Lipitor Diabetes Lawsuit is In Re: Lipitor (Atorvastatin Calcium) Marketing, Sales Practices And Products Liability Litigation, MDL No. 502, in the U.S. District Court for the District of South Carolina, Charleston Division.

Overview of Lipitor Diabetes Complications

Even after the FDA noted in 2012 of the number of reports it had received connected Lipitor to diabetes and the requirement the drug’s label be updated, the company’s update only explains that Lipitor may affect blood-sugar levels in the blood.

Medical experts explain that Lipitor causes type-2 diabetes by impairing the function of certain cells that are released from the pancreas, which are responsible for managing insulin. Woman are much more likely to develop diabetes after using Lipitor, based on reports.

For years, Lipitor has been the most popular cholesterol-lowering drug. It generated $7.7 billion for Pfizer in 2011 alone.

Because so many consumers were not aware of the risk of Lipitor diabetes, the result has been numerous Lipitor diabetes lawsuits against Pfizer. Many of them claim that the company knew about the risk for years, but chose to omit this information from the drug’s label.
