Lamictal SJSProduct liability lawyers are currently looking for potential plaintiffs to bring Lamictal Stevens Johnson Syndrome lawsuits. These lawsuits allege that Lamictal drug manufacturer, GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), failed to warn the medical community and the general public about the serious risk of developing Stevens Johnson Syndrome associated with taking the anti-seizure medication.

What is Lamictal?

Lamictal, generically known as lamotrigine, is an anticonvulsant drug often used to treat epilepsy. Lamictal can be used alone or along with other medications to treat epileptic seizures and is also commonly used to treat bipolar disorder or manic depression. The medication can be used for children as young as 2 but only when combined with the right combination of other medications.

What is Epilepsy?

Epilepsy is a chronic neurological disorder. It is often marked by recurrent and sudden sensory disturbances and convulsions associated with electrical disturbances in the brain. People diagnosed with epilepsy generally have had at least two seizures not caused by some reversible medical condition. Causes of epilepsy can be genetic, related to brain trauma, or due to causes completely unknown.

Dangerous Side Effects of Lamictal

Recently, medical researchers have linked Lamictal to risks of developing Stevens Johnson Syndrome (SJS). SJS is a rare and serious condition of the skin and mucous membranes. In many cases Stevens Johnson Syndrome is caused by an allergic reaction to medication, like Lamictal.

Symptoms of Lamictal SJS often begin as flu-like symptoms. Patients with these symptoms often experience fever, sore mouth and throat, fatigue, cough, and burning eyes. Several days later dermatological symptoms begin to develop. These SJS symptoms include facial swelling, tongue swelling, hives, skin pain, a quickly spreading red and purple skin rash, and blisters appearing on the skin and mucous membranes.

In severe cases SJS can develop into toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN). TEN is characterized by the same symptoms as SJS but the physical symptoms often cover a much larger expanse of the body. In severe cases, patients suffering from Lamictal SJS and/or TEN may experience skin sloughing off in patches.

Treatment for Lamictal SJS often requires hospitalization. Patients are usually treated in the burn ward of a hospital and treatment focuses on alleviating symptoms and keeping the patient hydrated. Patients may be required to remain in the hospital for weeks to months depending on the severity of the condition.

Overview of Lamictal Lawsuits

Approximately 300 cases of Stevens Johnson Syndrome occur every year. Many of these cases are caused by allergic reactions to medications like Lamictal. Lamictal SJS lawsuits against the drug manufacturer often allege that the company violated consumer protection laws. Claims against the company often include negligence, fraud and misrepresentation, breach of warranty and strict product liability.

Plaintiffs in these SJS lawsuits are usually victims who were personally affected by the medication or family members who lost loved ones due to Lactimal’s dangerous side effects. Awards and settlements from these Lamictal SJS lawsuits will help victims pay both past and future medical bills. Damages may also be awarded to compensate victims for the pain and suffering they were forced to endure.
