Many parents have filed birth defect lawsuits after their child was born with a birth defect that was allegedly caused by a medication the mother took during pregnancy. In this case, Clomid is a drug that many women have taken as a way of getting pregnant. The infertility treatment, supposed to help a women conceive, has led to multiple Clomid birth defects lawsuits filed against the drug’s manufacturer.
About Clomid
Clomid’s role is to stimulate egg production. It is an oral drug that is commonly prescribed to women who need help getting pregnant. Many women, however, buy the drug online without getting a prescription. It is partially because of this buying option for potential Clomid users that so many Clomid birth defects have arisen.
When using Clomid as a feritility treatment, timing is key. A doctor can help a patient time Clomid fertility drug use so that it stimulates egg production but is gone from the patient’s system before the time of conception. If this timing is wrong, which may be common among Clomid users who buy the drug without a prescription, then the risk of Clomid birth defects increases by 300 percent, according to one birth defects study. (A more concrete risk of Clomid birth defects is not yet known due to the low number of women in the study who used Clomid for their infertility treatment.)
The FDA has designated Clomid fertility treatment a Category X drug because of evidence that supports the risk of Clomid birth defects. The CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) found that Clomid birth defects may include:
- Anencephaly (baby born without parts of brain and skull)
- Coarctation of the aorta (narrowing of the aorta)
- Craniosyntosis (premature fusion of an infant’s skull sutures)
- Esophageal atresia (baby born without part of the esophagus)
- Omphalocele (baby’s abdominal organs are outside of the body)
- Septal heart defect (hole in the wall of the heart)
Clomid Birth Defects Lawsuit
As a result of these harmful Clomid birth defects, many parents have chosen to file Clomid birth defects lawsuits against the drug’s manufacturer. Clomid birth defects lawsuits can help a family pay for the medical costs of treating and raising a child with a birth defect, which can include: any education costs if the child requires special education, cost of future living, both physical and emotional pain and suffering, and other damages.
Many women are completely unaware that their infertility treatment may have a negative effect upon their child if the timing of drug use is not calculated. Clomid birth defects can change what is supposed to be a joyous occasion to a stressful one. A Clomid birth defects lawsuit settlement may help with the financial burdens families accrue when caring for a child with birth defects.Â
A Clomid birth defects class action lawsuit investigation is also currently underway.
In general, Clomid lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.
