testosterone-heart-attackA legal complaint from a Georgia couple has been added to a growing testosterone product multidistrict litigation in the Northern District of Illinois.

Plaintiff David B. began taking Axiron in 2002 and recently suffered a heart attack. The testosterone product lawsuit alleges that the plaintiffs were unaware of life-threatening heart risks associated with the low-t therapy. David is suing Axiron manufacturer, Eli Lilly, claiming the low-t drug maker failed to warn consumers of cardiac risks associated with testosterone products.

David is seeking financial compensation for economic loss, physical injuries, pain and suffering, along with other damages. His wife Judy is also named in the Axiron testosterone product lawsuit, pursuing claims that she too has suffered injuries like the loss of companionship and guidance from her husband. This low-t lawsuit joins 45 other cases that were transferred into the low-t drug MDL; legal experts expect thousands more will join.

Low Testosterone Therapy

Low testosterone products are prescribed to more than 5 million men in the United States each year. They are marketed to aging men who want to increase their sex drive, build muscle mass, and improve bone density. Low-t products come in a variety of forms including: testosterone injections, testosterone cream, testosterone gel, and a testosterone patch. The low-t product Axiron is the only underarm therapy treatment and makers claim it is effective 70 percent of the time in restoring normal hormone levels.

Symptoms of low testosterone include:

  • Low sex drive
  • Hair loss
  • Fatigue
  • Mood changes
  • Difficulty achieving erections
  • Increase in body fat
  • Loss of muscle mass

However effective the low testosterone products might be, recent medical studies have found that men using testosterone replacement therapy have a greater risk of having a heart attack or stroke.

A study by the Journal of American Medication Association observed nearly 9,000 low-t therapy users over a three-year time period. Researchers found that low-t consumers had a 30 percent greater risk of heart attack, stroke, and even death.

In January 2014, the FDA announced its plan to investigate the life-threatening risks allegedly linked to testosterone products. This has prompted numerous testosterone product lawsuits against low-t manufacturers by plaintiffs who allege they were not fully warned of testosterone side effects.

Low-T Multidistrict Litigation

In June 2014, U.S. District Judge Matthew F. Kennelly of the Northern District of Illinois was appointed to oversee a multidistrict litigation involving numerous low testosterone product lawsuits. David and Judy decided to join the low-t MDL after David suffered from a heart attack that they claim was a direct result of using the testosterone product, Axiron.

Many other testosterone product lawsuits have been filed across the United States accusing testosterone manufacturers of negligence and misrepresenting their products. Plaintiffs generally claim low-t drug makers should have disclosed the heart attack risks in order to adequately warn patients. Some consumers allege that testosterone product manufacturers had knowledge of possible cardiac side effects, yet intentionally hid the information from consumers.

If you have suffered from one of the life-threatening sides effects of a testosterone product, you may be able to join a testosterone product class action lawsuit.
