metal-hip-patientZimmer Holdings Inc. recently went to trial in two metal hip implant lawsuits. This company is facing over 400 similar claims, alleging similar concerns and injuries.

Other metal hip implant manufacturers facing such lawsuits include DePuy Orthopaedics and Stryker Corporation. Those companies reached settlements of $2.5 billion and more than $1 billion, respectively.

A number of metal-on-metal hip implants were recalled after numerous patients complained of developing metallosis, infection, and other side effects. This also spurred the FDA to send out a public warning about the tissue damage these hip implants could cause.

Metallosis, or blood-metal poisoning, occurs when metal levels in the blood escalate to a dangerous level. This complication is caused by the metal ions that are shed when the ball-and-socket joint of the metal-on-metal hip implants interact.

Zimmer Holdings Inc. defended itself against allegations that the company’s Durom Cup metal-on-metal hip implant caused debilitating injuries. This device was implanted in approximately 13,000 patients before it was withdrawn from the market by Zimmer.

Zimmer has had success defending itself in these lawsuits, winning the first metal hip implant lawsuit on Nov. 26, 2014. The second Zimmer metal hip implant lawsuit was filed by a retired teacher from Louisiana, Christine B., who had the device implanted in 2006 but had to have it removed three years later. Zimmer prevailed in that case, too.

Another lawsuit is moving forward in California, the first of a group of similar lawsuits pending in the Los Angeles Superior Court against Zimmer.

Zimmer is completing a $13.35 billion acquisition of rival Biomet Inc., which settled its own metal hip implant lawsuits for $56 million.
