Propecia sex problemsA Florida man has filed a Propecia lawsuit with claims that the hair loss treatment caused him to develop erectile dysfunction.

Plaintiff Kevin B. was prescribed Propecia at age 41 to help treat male pattern baldness and alleges he was unaware that Propecia side effects could include ED and related sexual dysfunction. The plaintiff is suing the makers of Propecia and Proscar, Merck & Co., Inc. and Merck Sharp & Dome Corp., for actively concealing Propecia’s sexual dysfunction side effects.

The Propecia lawsuit claims the manufacturers of the hair loss medication intentionally hid information about possible Propecia side effects including:

  • Breast cancer
  • Depression
  • Prostate cancer
  • Sexual dysfunction

The plaintiff alleges the intention for concealing the dangerous Propecia side effects was that “the scientific community, the general public, the Plaintiff and his doctors, would rely on the presumption that the dangers did not exist.” Kevin claims he still suffers from ED dysfunction even though he discontinued using the hair loss product and that his quality of life has been severely diminished.

Kevin alleges he was not adequately warned of the erectile dysfunction risks linked to Propecia or Proscar and had no reason to believe he shouldn’t take it for its intended use. Only 50 percent of patients who experience Propecia sexual dysfunction are reportedly able to have the medical condition resolved. Kevin claims his ED dysfunction is permanent.

Kevin claims that due to the negligent and inadequate Propecia warnings, he will continue to suffer financially and emotionally. He is seeking compensation for economic loss, medical care, depression treatment, rehabilitation and anxiety.

What is Propecia?

The main ingredient in both Proscar and Propecia is finasteride which is used to treat benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH). The FDA approved finasteride medication in 1992 under the brand name Proscar for BPH treatment. By 1997, the FDA approved a one milligram tablet of finasteride under the brand name Propecia to treat male pattern baldness. A study performed in 2003 found that Propecia is an effective treatment for hair loss in about 50 percent of users.

Researchers at the Boston University School of Medicine reported that 15 percent of men who used Propecia reported sexual dysfunction including ED and decreased libido. Other Propecia clinical studies have found sexual dysfunction side effects to be as high as 39 percent.

Propecia Lawsuits

More than 1 million patients currently use Propecia and/or Proscar in the United States. Hundreds of Propecia sexual dysfunction lawsuits have been filed and the number of cases continue to grow.

A mass litigation movement has been consolidated in the state of New York against Propecia makers alleging the product caused “persistent sexual dysfunction.” And another 250 Propecia lawsuits are pending in New Jersey state courts. Often times, filing a Propecia lawsuit as an individual or joining a Propecia class action lawsuit is the only way to receive financial compensation for the pain and suffering involved with using this medication.

The Propecia Lawsuit is Case No. 1:15-cv-02667-JG-VVP, in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York.
