Pradaxa lawsuits

A new Pradaxa reversibility agent was recently submitted to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for approval. Many believe this could be a major game changer in the market for the newer generation of blood thinning medications.

Pradaxa, generically known as dabigatran, is an anticoagulant that entered the market in 2010. Pradaxa is used to treat patients who are at risk for stroke, blood clots, or who suffer from atrial fibrillation, also known as an irregular heartbeat. It is believed that atrial fibrillation is a condition that effects nearly 2.5 million Americans.

Unfortunately, shortly after Pradaxa was released on the market, hundreds of adverse side effects reports were submitted to the FDA linking Pradaxa to serious complications. Within Pradaxa’s first three months on the market over 300 problems related to internal bleeding and gastrointestinal bleeding were reported to the FDA. After just one year on the market, over 260 deaths were allegedly caused by Pradaxa complications which include hemorrhage, uncontrolled bleeding, and stroke.

Pradaxa is often compared against Warfarin, the most widely used anticoagulant on the market. Warfarin, commonly known as Coumadin in the United States, has been approved for consumer use for at least 60 years. Although Coumadin is heavily prescribed by many medical professionals in the country, it does have the drawback of requiring constant monitoring and dose adjustment. Warfarin users must also comply with strict dietary restrictions and undergo blood monitoring.

Studies suggest that the risk of suffering from a major bleed while using Warfarin is approximately 6.5 percent. Many doctors continue to prescribe Warfarin over the newer generation of anticoagulants on the market because it is inexpensive and has a known reversal agent that can act as an antidote if a patient begins to suffer from an uncontrolled bleed. Patients experiencing excessive bleeding can be given a dose of vitamin K, sometimes mixed with plasma, to reverse the anticoagulant effects of the blood thinner. Pradaxa does not have the same remedy.

New Developments with Pradaxa

Although Warfarin is still popular with medical professionals and consumers over the last few years Pradaxa and several other similar blood thinners have brought a major change to the anticoagulant market. Pradaxa is aggressively advertised as an equally effective and easier to use blood thinning medication. Unlike Warfarin, Pradaxa does not require its users to follow a strict diet or undergo constant blood monitoring. However, major concerns exist over Pradaxa’s lack of an effective antidote to stop uncontrolled bleeds. During the time that Pradaxa has been available on the market, over 4,000 Pradaxa lawsuits have been filed relating to side effects of the drug.

Some medical professionals believe that concerns about Pradaxa and the risks of uncontrolled bleeding may soon be alleviated. Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, the manufacturer of Pradaxa, recently submitted a Pradaxa antidote to the FDA. If approved, the Pradaxa antidote could be a game changer for the anticoagulant market. In the meantime, it is likely that many more Pradaxa lawsuits will be filed against the drug manufacturer by consumers who have suffered from serious bleeding side effects.

Pradaxa Lawsuits

Product liability lawyers are currently looking for potential plaintiffs to bring Pradaxa lawsuits against the pharmaceutical manufacturer for creating an unreasonably dangerous and defective drug and failing to adequately warn the medical community about its side effects. Awards and settlements from these lawsuits will help victims pay both past and future medical bills, as well as compensate victims for the pain and suffering they endured due to taking the medication.

In general, Pradaxa lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.
