incubator-baby-clomidProduct liability lawyers are looking for potential plaintiffs to bring Clomid lawsuits against the drug manufacturer for failing to disclose an increased risk of birth defects. Due to the drug company’s alleged failure to inform consumers of these risks, many women inadvertently put their unborn children at risk of developing severe birth defects.

Clomid (clomiphene), often sold under the brand name serophene, is a popular fertility treatment used by many women. Women using Clomid usually suffer from irregular ovulation or polycystic ovulation syndrome. Polycystic ovulation syndrome is a condition in which a woman has too many male hormones and not enough female hormones. This syndrome makes ovulation rare and or irregular.

Polycystic ovarian syndrome keeps follicles in the ovaries from growing and releasing eggs. This causes a buildup in the ovaries which eventually causes small estrogen-releasing cysts to develop. Between 5 and 10 percent of women in the United States are affected by polycystic ovarian syndrome.

Overview of Clomid

Patients usually take Clomid in pill form for a five-day regimen once a month. Most women start taking the pill three to five days after the beginning their menstrual cycle. Prior to using the medication its important for a doctor to make sure the patient is not pregnant.

Doctor supervision is important to ensure that the drug has cleared a woman’s system prior to conception. Clomid works by triggering the body to increase production of hormones that trigger ovulation. The medication can take up to two months before regular ovulation occurs.

Dangerous Side Effects Associated with Clomid

Based on data from a National Defects Prevention Study, the Center for Disease Control found that children born to mothers who took Clomid without proper medical supervision were 300 percent more likely to be born with birth defects than women who did not use the fertility treatment.

Birth defects associated with Clomid and Serophene include anecephaly (missing parts of the brain and skill), coarctation of the aorta (narrowing of the aorta), craniosyntosis (premature fusion of the skill sutures), esophageal atresia (missing part of the esophagus), omphalocele (abdominal organs outside of the body), and septal heart defect (hole in the heart).

Clomid is labeled as a category X drug by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Studies done on category X drugs are have shown correlation to fetal abnormalities. According to the FDA, category X drugs should not be taken while pregnant because the potential risks outweigh the potential benefits.

Overview of Clomid Lawsuits

Many of the plaintiffs bringing these lawsuits are women who ordered Clomid online rather than speaking with a medical professional. According to the Clomid lawsuits, the pharmaceutical manufacturers failed to warn consumers about dangerous risks associated with using the medication without the assistance of a medical professional.

Successful Clomid lawsuits brought against the pharmaceutical company will help victims pay both past and future medical bills as well as compensate them for pain and suffering. These lawsuits will also help hold major pharmaceutical companies accountable for the harm that they have allegedly caused.

In general, Clomid lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.
