Pradaxa class action lawsuitOne of the newest anticoagulants to hit the market, Pradaxa, may carry a serious risk for internal bleeding. More than 1,000 users have reported near-fatal bleeding events after taking the medication, and within its first year on the market more than 260 deaths were reported to the FDA with claims that Pradaxa internal bleeding was the cause.

Thousands of plaintiffs have already settled Pradaxa lawsuits with the manufacturer, Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, and new lawsuits continue to be filed. Most plaintiffs claim they were not given adequate warning about the potentially deadly Pradaxa bleeding risks. Pradaxa attorneys are seeking financial compensation for their clients who suffered from internal bleeding due to the allegedly inadequate warning. A recent Pradaxa lawsuit resulted in a settlement of $160,000 per plaintiff.

Pradaxa Complications

The FDA approved Pradaxa in 2010 to reduce the risk of stroke in atrial fibrillation patients. Since then it has also been approved to treat blood clots in the legs and lungs. In just a few short years, the number of Pradaxa prescriptions has reached nearly 9 million.

However, within the first three months of being on the market, the FDA received more than 300 severe adverse event (SAE) reports that Pradaxa caused internal bleeding and other health problems.

Pradaxa manufacturers claim that the medication is more appealing than traditional anticoagulants like Warfarin (Coumadin) because you don’t have to go through regular blood testing and there are no dietary restrictions with Pradaxa. Despite its touted ease, however, recent studies show that other anticoagulants could be a wiser health option.

Patients taking Warfarin who experience excessive bleeding can be given a dose of vitamin K to get it under control. Patients taking Pradaxa who experience internal bleeding have no way to stop it since there is no known antidote. If a Pradaxa patient experiences internal bleeding it may take hours and multiple blood transfusions to remove the medication from the patient’s system, which is the only way to stop the uncontrolled internal bleeding.

Some of the most common Pradaxa side effects include various forms of internal bleeding such intestinal bleeding, bleeding on the brain, and kidney bleeding, as well as heart attack and stroke.

Symptoms of internal bleeding include:

  • Easy or unusual bruising
  • Black or bloody stools
  • Coughing up blood or vomit that looks like coffee grounds
  • Red, pink or brown urine
  • Heavy menstrual periods
  • Headache, dizziness, or weakness
  • Numbness, tingling, or muscle weakness (especially in the legs and feet)

Pradaxa Internal Bleeding Lawsuit

The growing number of Pradaxa internal bleeding lawsuits claim the company downplayed the risks of internal bleeding associated with taking the medication. Plaintiffs claim they were unaware that there was no known Pradaxa antidote if an internal bleeding event occurred.

Individuals joining a Pradaxa class action lawsuit or filing individual Pradaxa lawsuits claim the manufacturer was negligent in providing bleeding warnings and are seeking compensation for the high medical costs and pain and suffering involved with internal bleeding complications.

In general, Pradaxa lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.
