A recent Benicar lawsuit was filed in a Louisiana court against Daiichi Sankyo Pharmaceuticals and Forest Laboratories, alleging the blood-pressure drug caused serious intestinal problems and other complications.
Plaintiff Bernadette B. was first prescribed Benicar in May 2006 to treat her high blood pressure and took it as prescribed until August 2013, according to her lawsuit.
According to the Benicar lawsuit, Benicar side effects caused the plaintiff to suffer various gastrointestinal conditions for which she had to undergo an emergency endoscopy that revealed numerous lesions and internal bleeding in 2010. Bernadette’s condition continued to deteriorate and she underwent two more endoscopies, one of which resulted in surgery to remove a hematin in her stomach.
According to the lawsuit, doctors then determined her use of Benicar caused her intestinal injuries so Bernadette stopped taking the medication, which resolved her symptoms. The Benicar lawsuit further alleges that Daiichi Sankyo knew, or should have known, about the risk of dangerous Benicar side effects, but failed to disclose the risk until after independent studies were released and the FDA issued a warning in 2013.
What is Benicar?
The Food and Drug Administration approved Benicar to treat high blood pressure in 2002. Benicar is one of the top 100 selling drugs in the US. with over 11 million prescriptions written each year. It brought an estimated $3.1 billion in sales for Daiichi Sankyo, whose total revenue was reported at $11 billion for 2013.
Olmesartan, the active ingredient in Benicar, works by blocking the activity of angiotensin-II, a protein produced by the liver. When Benicar blocks the angiotensin-II receptor, the blood vessels are allowed to relax. This decreases the pressure in the veins and allows the heart to work more efficiently.
Benicar Side Effects
Benicar has a number of severe side effects including chronic diarrhea, severe abdominal pain, nutrient malabsorption, and significant weight loss.
Additionally, Benicar may cause the serious gastrointestinal condition known as “sprue-like enteropathy.” Sprue-like enteropathy, whose symptoms include chronic diarrhea, vomiting, and excessive weight loss, is often confused with Celiac disease.
Many Benicar patients, like Bernadette, are have filed Benicar lawsuits seeking compensation for the suffering they endured.
The Benicar Lawsuit is Case No: 1:15-cv-02567-RBK-JS, in the U.S. District Court District Eastern District of Louisiana.
