viagra-melanoma-moleA Viagra melanoma lawsuit was filed by a Kentucky man who alleges Pfizer Inc.’s erectile dysfunction drug caused him to develop the deadly skin cancer.

Plaintiff Joe H. said he was prescribed  Viagra in April 2009 and used the drug according to the instructions, according to his Viagra melanoma lawsuit. He said he and his physician were not aware of the link between Viagra and melanoma when a black mole was discovered on his ear.

After having the mole tested, Joe was diagnosed with melanoma in late 2011. At that point they became aware of the correlation and his use of Viagra stopped.

Joe had the mole surgically removed on Oct. 21, 2011. That did not eliminate the potential for melanoma to return.

The Viagra melanoma lawsuit notes there were no warnings or indications on Viagra’s warning label that increased risk of melanoma was a possible side effect. Joe insists that he never would have used Viagra if he had known about the risk of melanoma, and that Pfizer was responsible to warn of all side effects.

The Viagra lawsuit accuses Pfizer Inc. of negligence, false advertising, concealing information, and misrepresenting a product.

This Viagra Melanoma Lawsuit is Case No. 1:15-cv-02659-AJN, in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York.

Overview of Viagra Melanoma

Since 1998, Viagra has been used to treat millions of men suffering from erectile dysfunction. Viagra quickly became one Pfizer’s best-selling products, earning billions annually even with the release of new erectile dysfunction drugs, Cialis and Levitra.

The concern of Viagra melanoma become a bigger concern after a study published in 2014 that serves as the basis for many Viagra melanoma lawsuits. While experts agree that additional research is needed, the study in the April 2014 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association raised serious issues.

Researchers observed 25,000 subjects and found that men who had used Viagra at some point faced an 84 percent increased risk of developing melanoma. It is unclear why this side effect may be occurring, but some theorize that Viagra opens up certain genetic pathways that make the skin more vulnerable to skin cancer.
