Actos bladder cancerAn Actos bladder cancer lawsuit has been filed by two New York residents who claim they took the diabetes medication for several years and developed bladder cancer as a result.

Plaintiffs in the joint Actos bladder cancer lawsuit, George B. and Stephen F., allege that Actos maker, Takeda Pharmaceuticals, knew about the unreasonably dangerous risks involved with taking the medication and still marketed and sold the product without adequate warning. They are seeking more than $75,000 in damages to cover medical expenses and other damages.

George took the medication as directed for three years before being diagnosed with bladder cancer. Stephen took the diabetes drug for seven years and has also been diagnosed with bladder cancer.

The plaintiffs claim that had they been aware of the bladder cancer risks involved, they would have not taken Actos and would have looked for an alternative medication to treat their type-2 diabetes.

The plaintiffs in this Actos cancer lawsuit allege they will suffer ongoing injuries for cancer treatment for a condition that they claim would not have occurred if Takeda would have been straightforward and thorough in their warnings about the high chance of developing bladder cancer.

They are seeking compensation for medical expenses in addition to economic loss and decreased life expectancy.

Actos Side Effects

Actos was approved by the FDA in July 1999 to treat type-2 diabetes. The medication works to help the body produce the proper amount of insulin for energy. It is the 10th bestselling medication in the United States and has global sales nearing $5 million dollars to date.

Prior to it’s FDA approval, the drug was studied on lab rats and was found to produce drug-induced tumors. More recent studies of Actos side effects have found a link between the drug and bladder cancer and conclude that the drug may increase the chances of cancer by 40 percent.

In 2011, the federal agency issued a warning that use of Actos for more than one-year may be associated with an increase risk of bladder cancer and ordered the risk to be added onto the drug’s warning label.

Plaintiffs George and Stephen allege that Takeda “concealed and continue to conceal their knowledge of Actos’ unreasonably dangerous risks from Plaintiffs, their physicians, other consumers, and the medical community.”

Symptoms of Actos bladder cancer include: blood in the urine, urinary tract infections, and painful or frequent urination.

The Actos Bladder Cancer Lawsuit is Case No. 6:15-cv-01178 in the U.S. District Court Western District of Louisiana.
