Shower to Shower body powderShower to Shower is a feminine hygiene powder that has been manufactured by Johnson & Johnson for decades. However, the problem is that it contains talcum powder.

Several recent studies and baby powder cancer lawsuitsallege that talcum applied to the genital area can increase a woman’s risk of ovarian cancer.

What is Shower to Shower?

Shower to Shower is marketed as an after-shower body powder with the slogan, “Just a sprinkle a day helps keep odor away.” The powder primarily consists of cornstarch and talcum powder, which help absorb moisture.

Shower to Shower and Ovarian Cancer

Talcum powder, an ingredient in Shower to Shower, is a powdered mineral that has been used for decades in cosmetics, baby powder, feminine hygiene products, and more. In its natural state, talcum contains asbestos, a known carcinogen. Since 1973, federal law has prohibited asbestos in consumer products containing talc.

However, a number of recent studies have linked asbestos-free talcum powder products, like Shower to Shower, to an increased risk of ovarian cancer. Tissue samples from women with ovarian cancer have also detected talc fibers in the ovary, suggesting that talcum powder can move through the vagina, uterus, fallopian tubes, and into the ovaries.

Since 1971, more than 20 studies have linked talc powder to ovarian cancer, and in 2003, an analysis of 16 of these studies found that women using talcum powder were 33 percent more likely to develop ovarian cancer. It has been alleged that Johnson & Johnson, the maker of popular talc-based powders, including Shower to Shower, knew about the ovarian cancer risk since at least 1982, but failed to warn women using these products.

Ovarian Cancer Information

The American Cancer Society estimates that 22,000 women will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer this year, and over 14,000 will die from the disease. Although ovarian cancer is rare, it is one of the deadliest cancers because symptoms are mild and vague, which tends to delay diagnosis until it is difficult or impossible to cure.

Ovarian cancer symptoms include:

  • Vaginal bleeding
  • Abnormal vaginal discharge
  • Frequent bloating
  • Pain in the belly or pelvis
  • Abdominal pressure, fullness, swelling
  • Changes in bowel or bladder habits (constipation, frequent urination, etc.)
  • Persistent fatigue
  • Low back pain
  • Loss of appetite or feeling full

Baby Powder Cancer Lawsuits

Increasing medical evidence suggests that women should not use talcum powder, like Shower to Shower, as an intimate hygiene powder because of its link to ovarian cancer. Any woman diagnosed with ovarian cancer is urged to consider the possible link to talcum powder.
