nuvaring_logoNuvaRing has recently been linked to a serious side effect known as pseudotumor cerebri.

NuvaRing is a popular form of contraception. It is a small and flexible vaginal ring inserted once every three weeks. Studies suggest that when taken as directed, the NuvaRing is equally as effective as birth control pills.

NuvaRing was first manufactured by Organon, a Dutch pharmaceutical company. Organon eventually became known as Schering-Plough. The Food and Drug Administration approved NuvaRing for consumer use in 2001. NuvaRing manufacturers have successfully marketed NuvaRing as the month-long protection from pregnancy, allowing women to not have to think about contraception every day.

What is Pseudotumor Cerebri?

Unfortunately, many women using NuvaRing have begun reporting the development of pseudotumor cerebri, a serious neurological condition. Pseudotumor cerebri occurs when pressure builds up in the brain.

The build up of pressure is often the result of a disruption in the flow of cerebrospinal fluid. Science has shown that the brain contains four interconnected ventricles, cerebrospinal fluid fills these ventricles and helps to cushion and protect the brain and spinal cord from injury.

Our brains are constantly producing cerebrospinal fluid and our bodies reabsorb the fluid into our bloodstream. When pressure increases in the brain it can affect the absorption process and create a build up of cerebrospinal fluid.

The build up of intracranial pressure can lead to the development of severe headaches, vision problems, and ringing in the ears. It is common for patients to be initially diagnosed as having a brain tumor before medical professionals discover the true underlying issue.

Symptoms of Pseudotumor Cerebri

Symptoms of pseudotumor cerebri include depression, vomiting, forgetfulness, tinnitus (persistent ringing in the ears), nausea, headache, vision loss, and the swelling of the optic nerve. Pseudotumor cerebri is often treated surgically.

Depending on each individual’s condition and circumstances, medical professionals may suggest a ventricular shunt to drain fluid from the brain into the peritoneal cavity, stomach, or heart; a lumbar shunt to drain fluid from the spine into the peritoneal cavity or stomach; or an optic nerve sheath fenestration. An optic nerve sheath fenestration requires surgeons to make an opening in the covering of the optic nerve to release fluid and pressure on the nerve.

Pseudotumor Cerebri Lawsuits

These NuvaRing side effects may result in women across the nation filing pseudotumor cerebri lawsuits. Compensation from successful lawsuits will help victims pay both past and future medical bills. It will also help compensate victims for the pain and suffering they endured.

Pseudotumor cerebri lawsuits may allege that the drug makers violated consumer protection laws and failed to warn the medical community and general public about serious risks associated with taking the medication. These NuvaRing lawsuits are likely to assert claims for negligence, products liability, breach of warranty and misrepresentation.
