Higher One OneAccount Deceptive Fees Class Action Settlement

A $15 million settlement was reached in a class action lawsuit against Higher One Holdings Inc., Higher One Inc., The Bancorp Bank, Wright Express Financial Services Corporation (now known as WEX Bank), and Taylor Capital Group Inc. regarding the marketing and fees associated with the Higher One OneAccount. The class action lawsuit alleged the defendants inadequately disclosed the refund disbursement methods available to students for tuition and financial aid refunds, and that they inadequately disclosed fees associated with Higher One accounts. The defendants deny any wrongdoing but agreed to settle the class action lawsuit to avoid the risk, delay and expense of a trial.

Class Members of the Higher One OneAccount settlement included anyone who opened a OneAccount bank account between July 1, 2006 and Aug. 2, 2012 and incurred a fee. Viewers of Top Class Actions are reporting they have received checks ranging from $8 to nearly $270 from the Higher One class action settlement.

Chase Home Mortgage TCPA Class Action Settlement

In 2012, JPMorgan Chase reached a class action settlement over allegations it violated the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA) by robo-calling mortgage borrowers on their cell phones without permission. Chase denies the allegations but agreed to settle the class action lawsuit to avoid the expense and risk of trial. Consumers who received one of these autodialed calls between 2006 and 2011 were eligible to file claims for benefits from the Chase TCPA settlement. Class Members who submitted valid and timely claims are reportedly receiving checks worth $70.12 from the Chase TCPA class action settlement.

Dollar General Background Check Class Action Settlement

Last year, Dollar General agreed to pay $4 million to settle a class action lawsuit alleging it conducted background checks on job applicants that did not comply with federal law. According to the class action lawsuit, Dollar General failed to comply with the disclosure and authorization requirements of the Fair Credit Reporting Act. Dollar General contends that it complied with FCRA at all times but agreed to settle the class action lawsuit to avoid the uncertainty and expense of ongoing litigation. Class Members of the Dollar General FCRA class action settlement include job applicants who were subjected to a background check report used by Dollar General for an employment decision between Feb. 13, 2010 and Oct. 14, 2014 (though not all Class Members were eligible for payment).
