Abdomen painA group of plaintiffs from across several states have filed a joint Actos bladder cancer lawsuit against the makers of Actos.

Actos is a drug designed to help treat type-2 diabetes. Type-2 diabetes is a chronic condition wherein patients cannot control the amount of glucose (sugar) in their blood.

However, numerous reports and studies have suggested that Actos can greatly increase the risk of developing bladder cancer, which has led to numerous Actos lawsuits.

Additionally, research found a dose-dependent risk, meaning that patients taking more Actos had a proportional increase in their risk of bladder cancer, further strengthening claims that Actos could cause bladder cancer.

Actos lawsuits allege that not only can Actos cause bladder cancer, but that the makers of Actos, Eli Lilly and related companies, were aware — or reasonably should have been aware — of the risk. To back this assertion, Actos lawsuits cite studies that suggest a risk of bladder cancer.

In addition, the FDA has issued a black box warning for Actos, warning that taking Actos increases the risk of bladder cancer and that doctors and patients must consider the risk of this potential Actos side effect.

Actos bladder cancer lawsuits typically seek to recoup the cost of bladder cancer treatment, lost wages, lost income potential, wrongful death compensation, and legal fees allegedly stemming from Actos bladder cancer.

So many Actos lawsuits have been filed that the court system has consolidated them into a multidistrict litigation, or MDL. In MDLs, the court system groups together similar lawsuits, so earlier Actos lawsuits’ verdicts can inform later Actos lawsuits — possibly leading to mass settlements if early Actos lawsuits go in favor of the plaintiffs.

In this current Actos lawsuit, four plaintiffs are joining the massive Actos MDL. This involves four plaintiffs from the states of Arizona, California, Tennessee, and North Carolina. Their Actos bladder cancer lawsuit makes the same allegations found in the bulk of other Actos lawsuits — that Actos can allegedly cause Actos bladder cancer, and that Eli Lilly did not do enough to protect the public from the risk of Actos bladder cancer.

The Actos Bladder Cancer Lawsuit is Case No. 6:15-cv-00190-RFD-PJH, filed within the larger Actos MDL In Re: Actos (Pioglitazone) Products Liability Litigation, MDL No. 2299, in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Louisiana.
