clomid-birth-defectsMany women who have used the fertility drug Clomid to aid in pregnancy claim that the drug caused their child to be born with a birth defect. Clomid has been linked to birth defects by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The FDA labeled Clomid Category X. This means that during the development of the drug, most likely from the animal staging period, Clomid birth defects were discovered. Although this does not mean there is a definitive connection between the Clomid fertility drug and birth defects, it is suggestive of a strong connection.

What is Clomid?

Clomid is the go-to fertility drug for many physicians. Many women are given the drug to help regulate ovulation or to assist with conception problems. It may be prescribed if the cause of infertility is unknown or in the case of male infertility (as it may help increase female fertility).

Clomid causes the pituitary gland to increase the amount of estrogen it produces which can help eggs to mature and can lead to pregnancy.

Clomid Birth Defects Questioned

It has been suggested that Clomid may not be the cause of the many birth defects that women have claimed. A pregnant women does not need to continue Clomid fertility drug treatment and would most likely not take the drug while pregnant.

Women over the age of 35 with fertility problems have a higher change of giving birth to a child with a birth defect in the first place, let alone other Clomid birth defect risks. Many Clomid users are already at a higher risk.

Underlying conditions may also affect birth defect risks.

Still, studies have found higher rates of birth defects in Clomid users than in non-Clomid users. Common Clomid birth defects may include heart defects, skull defects, Down syndrome, or several other conditions.

Chances of having a child with a birth defect increase if the mothers takes Clomid fertility drugs while pregnant, which may happen if the dose is not timed properly.

Because of alleged Clomid birth defect risks, women may choose to file a Clomid birth defect lawsuit. Birth defect lawsuits may be able to help victims win compensation in order to help with medical bills, any special needs that a child born with Clomid birth defects has, pain and suffering, and other damages. Allegations may include failure to warn about birth defect risks associated with the fertility drug.

A Clomid pregnancy birth defects class action lawsuit investigation has also been launched against the drug manufacturer.

In general, Clomid lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.
