A recent study found that people who take quinolone antibiotics were more likely to develop painful peripheral neuropathy, a condition that affects the peripheral nervous system. Individuals have claimed in peripheral neuropathy lawsuits that many drug makers have failed to warn users against peripheral neuropathy side effects.
What is Peripheral Neuropathy?
The peripheral nervous system connects the brain and spinal cord to the rest of the body. Any condition that affects this part of the body can easily have significant consequences. Peripheral neuropathy is simply nerve damage. When the nervous system is damaged, the body’s ability to interpret physical sensations, move, or do/feel many other common things is impacted.
Peripheral neuropathy symptoms may include:
- Tingling or numbness in the hands or feet, which may spread upward into the arms or legs
- Burning pain
- Sharp, jabbing or electric-like pain
- Extreme sensitivity to touch
- Skin, hair or nail changes
- Lack of coordination
- Muscle weakness
- Paralysis
- Heat intolerance
- Bowel, bladder of digestive problems
- Dizziness or lightheadedness
These peripheral neuropathy symptoms may vary in number and severity depending on the severity of the case. It may also be possible to mistake certain peripheral neuropathy symptoms as being caused by another source. Peripheral neuropathy effects may be permanent.
Victims of painful peripheral neuropathy may also experience other quinolone antibiotic side effects such as uveitis, an eye complication that can easily lead to major vision problems such as blurred or decreased vision, floaters, or even blindness.
Quinolone Antibiotics
Quinolone antibiotics (or fluoroquinolone drugs) are strong antibiotics that can be used to treat several different types of bacterial infections. They are now one of the most commonly used drugs in the country. Avelox, Cipro, and Levaquin are popular quinolone antibiotics. These drugs, however, have been linked to several cases of peripheral neuropathy.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning in 2003 about painful peripheral neuropathy side effects that could follow fluoroquinolone use. It was found that users may develop the nerve damage condition within a week of taking a quinolone antibiotic.
A study was published in the journal Neurology that found quinolone antibiotic users were more likely to develop peripheral neuropathy symptoms when compared to non-drug users. The risk of nerve damage was alleged to be as much as doubled in quinolone users. It was also found that Avelox users were five times more likely to experience negative eye side effects.
Many victims have claimed that they were not warned against painful peripheral neuropathy side effects and have filed peripheral neuropathy lawsuits against major drug manufacturers.
Quinolone antibiotic lawsuits have also been filed over quinolone antibiotic side effects such as uveitis and vision loss. Plaintiffs may win compensation for medical expenses as well as for pain and suffering.
