lumber liquidators toxic flooring

Lumber Liquidators is facing a slew of new toxic flooring class action lawsuits, all of which allege that the Chinese-manufactured laminate flooring sold by Lumber Liquidators releases dangerous amounts of formaldehyde.

Just within the last month, two new Lumber Liquidators class action lawsuits were filed with specific claims for homeowners in the states of Florida and Nevada. These toxic flooring class action lawsuits allege that since having the Lumber Liquidators’ laminated flooring installed in their homes, homeowners live with the fear that they may suffer various health problems caused by laminated flooring side effects.

Plaintiff Rosie O., the lead plaintiff of the Nevada case, claims that she recently installed 700 feet of Lumber Liquidators laminate flooring in her Las Vegas home. In her toxic flooring class action lawsuit, she alleges that soon after having the Lumber Liquidators’ products installed in her home, Rosie and her pet dog began to experience constant eye-watering while her husband suddenly developed respiratory problems.

In the wake of these health problems, Rosie saw a report on “60 Minutes” on CBS investigating Lumber Liquidators’ Chinese-made laminate flooring, which was revealed to release high levels of formaldehyde.

The second Lumber Liquidators toxic flooring class action lawsuit was filed by plaintiff Jacqueline S., an Orlando homeowner, who alleges she recently installed 59 boxes of Chinese-made laminate flooring in her Florida vacation home.

According to Jacqueline’s Lumber Liquidators class action lawsuit, she alleges she experienced a strong chemical smell after having the laminate flooring installed.

Fearing for the safety of her 5-year-old son, Jacqueline called the store where she bought the Lumber Liquidators flooring to complain about the smell, at which time she was told by the retail store that she had nothing to worry about. Just like Rosie, this plaintiff also saw the “60 Minutes” Lumber Liquidators segment and became concerned for her son’s and her health.

The “60 Minutes” report mentioned above has spurred the filing of several Lumber Liquidators lawsuits and class action lawsuits filed within the last few weeks.

The investigative TV news segment reported that certain Lumber Liquidator flooring products imported into the United States from China failed to meet certain states’ formaldehyde emissions standards. Some experts suggest that hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses across the country may potentially contain toxic Chinese flooring distributed by Lumber Liquidators.

Lumber Liquidators Toxic Flooring Complications

All the recently filed Lumber Liquidators class action lawsuits similarly allege that the Chinese-made laminate flooring contains unsafe levels of formaldehyde, a chemical commonly used in the manufacturing of resins, building materials, and is regularly used as an embalming agent.

The EPA classifies this chemical as a probable carcinogen and the National Academy of Sciences indicates that formaldehyde can cause cancer in humans. Despite these classifications and discoveries, the EPA has never instituted regulations regarding acceptable formaldehyde gas levels for laminate home flooring.

Common formaldehyde exposure symptoms that Lumber Liquidators consumers have claimed to experience after installing the laminate flooring include:

  • Respiratory symptoms
  • Eye, nose, and/or throat irritation
  • Headaches
  • Nausea
  • Chest pain
  • Rashes
  • Vomiting

Some other laminate flooring side effects linked to formaldehyde exposure include some forms of cancer and leukemia.

UPDATE: Several Lumber Liquidators class action lawsuits were consolidated into a multidistrict litigation (MDL), or mass tort, and transferred to a Virginia federal court by the U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation (JPML), alleging that the flooring company sold wood floors containing toxic levels of formaldehyde.
