Clomid Recent studies suggest that taking Clomid while pregnant increases the risk of birth defects in children. Clomid, also known as clomiphene citrate, is a medication prescribed to women to stimulate ovulation. Clomid is often used by women who struggle to conceive. It is generally the first attempt method in the line of fertility treatment options.

Although Clomid is usually prescribed by a medical professional, some women decide to purchase the fertility drug over the internet without a physician’s oversight. But many women do not realize that the use of Clomid requires proper timing in order to prevent increased risks of birth defects. When taking Clomid, doctors often direct patients to record body temperature, perform ovulation tests, and time sexual intercourse. A medical professional understands the necessary dose timing and can time a Clomid dose so that it will stimulate ovulation while providing sufficient time to allow the drug to sufficiently clear a woman’s system prior to conception. Clomid is not recommended for women who experience primary pituitary or ovarian failure and can no longer produce eggs.

Study Links Clomid to Increased Risk of Birth Defects

An Australian study published in the New England Medical Journal found that, compared to in-vitro fertilization and intracytoplasmic sperm injection, the rate of birth defects linked to Clomid exceeded those of any other drug. The study looked at medical records of Australian births and fertility treatments that occurred between the years 1986 to 2002. The study found that while most fertility treatments cause increased risks of birth defects, pregnant women taking Clomid saw a 300 percent increase in the risk of birth defects.

Common Birth Defects Associated With Clomid

Types of birth defects associated with the use of Clomid include:

  • Anencephanly (babies born without parts of the brain and skull)
  • Narrowing of the aorta
  • Premature fusion of an infant’s skull
  • Esophageal atresia
  • Omphalocele (babies born with abdominal organs outside of the body)
  • Septal heart defects

Clomid is also associated with neural tube birth defects. Neural tube birth defects occur when an infants neural tube does not close completely, leaving openings in the spinal cord or brain. Neural tube defects in infants can result in spina bifida and many other serious disabilities.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has stated that larger studies should be done to determine the effects of Clomid on a developing fetus. The FDA has labeled Clomid as a category X drug. The category X label is given to drugs if the risks associated with taking the drug while pregnant clearly outweigh any potential benefits.

Clomid Lawsuit Investigations

Personal injury attorneys are investigating claims in hopes of assisting women in receiving compensation for their injuries. Settlements and awards from these Clomid lawsuits will hopefully help women pay for past and future medical bills as well as compensate victims for the pain and suffering they may have endured.

Clomid birth defects lawsuits will likely claim the drug manufacturer violated consumer protection laws and failed to warn medical professionals and the general public about the risks associated with the medication. The Clomid lawsuits will likely allege claims for negligence, breach of warranty, misrepresentation, fraud and deceit, and products liability.

In general, Clomid lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.
