hip-implant-handA metal-on-metal hip implant lawsuit was filed against Biomet by a Maryland man who alleges he suffered serious complications from the device.

Plaintiff Milton D. claims Biomet’s M2A Magnum Hip Replacement System caused painful and debilitating injuries that required the device to eventually be removed. Milton underwent right hip replacement surgery on Oct. 16, 2007 and had the metal-on-metal hip replacement implanted.

Soon after the device was implanted, metal ions from the device allegedly got into the plaintiff’s bloodstream and caused a variety of complications. Milton suffered extreme pain and stiffness from walking and other basic activities, leading to the removal of the hip implant on Nov. 4, 2014. A different hip implant model was used to replace the Biomet model.

At this time, the extent of the plaintiff’s injuries are not known as well as any permanent side effects that could have occurred with the allegedly defective metal hip implant, according to the hip implant lawsuit.

Additionally, the plaintiff accuses Biomet of not making an effort to notify the plaintiff or his physicians of the side effects that could potentially occur when using their metal hip implant.

The hip implant lawsuit accuses Biomet of engaging in fraudulent and aggressive marketing, including allegedly misleading the plaintiff and his physician about the efficiency of the Magnum hip implant and the potential side effects.

Milton insists that he never would have chosen Biomet’s Magnum device, if he had known about the possible injuries he faced.

This Metal Hip Lawsuit is In Re: Biomet M2A Magnum Hip Implant Products Liability Litigation, MDL No. 2391, in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Indiana, South Bend Division.

Overview of Metal-on-Metal Hip Implant Complications

When metal-on-metal hip implants were first introduced, it was thought that they would be superior to their plastic or ceramic counterparts. It was thought that these devices would last longer and would be more durable, which would make them better equipped to handle more physically demanding exercise like running and exercise.

For this reason, metal hip implants became popular with younger patients needing hip implants, as well as older patients who wish to maintain their active lifestyle.

According to medical experts, the problems associated with the device originate from the ball-and-socket joints of the metal-on-metal hip implants. Metal ions can be shed into the blood, leading to metallosis, or blood-metal poisoning.

Across the country, metal hip implant patients who were injured by device complications are filing lawsuits against the manufacturing companies. Most allege that the companies deliberately concealed vital safety information in order to maintain their products’ market value.
