Johnson's Baby PowderA baby powder cancer lawsuit was filed in New Jersey against Johnson & Johnson claiming that Johnson’s Baby Powder caused a woman to develop ovarian cancer after decades of use. This is one of many baby powder complaints filed against the popular manufacturer.

51-year-old plaintiff Karen B. and her husband filed the lawsuit last October. Karen used Johnson’s Baby Powder for over 30 years for feminine hygiene, according to the baby powder lawsuit. She was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in May 2014.  Multiple surgeries and treatments were required in order to fight the cancer.

Karen claims in her baby powder lawsuit that had Johnson & Johnson warned against baby powder side effects in using baby powder for feminine hygiene purposes, she never would have used the product.

The baby powder cancer lawsuit states that using baby powder for feminine hygiene reasons was an “intended and foreseeable use of the product.” Karen is one of countless women who have used baby powder or Johnson & Johnson’s Shower to Shower for feminine hygiene purposes and one of hundreds of women who have allegedly developed baby powder cancer as a result.

Johnson and Johnson was accused of marketing Shower to Shower and Johnson’s Baby Powder for feminine hygiene. Their slogan stated, “For you, use every day to help feel soft, fresh and comfortable.” Johnson’s baby powder products, however, contain talcum powder, a dangerous potential carcinogen.

Talcum Powder Dangers

Talcum powder has often been compared to asbestos, a substance that causes mesothelioma and lung cancer. Like asbestos, talcum powder has the ability to enter the body and remain undetected for years before cancer grows and become noticeable. Talcum powder has been called “very toxic” and “cancer causing” by government and health officials.

Johnson and Johnson has allegedly been aware of talcum powder dangers since 1971. A study performed 11 years later suggested that women who used talcum powder products in their genital area were 92 percent more likely to develop ovarian cancer. It is important to note that studies have found baby powder cancer risk increases with use in the genital area and not other parts of the body. The current label on Johnson’s baby powder warns to keep the baby powder out of the eyes of children. In spite of these early findings, and many more contemporary statistics, Johnson & Johnson has failed to change their warning label on their baby powder products to include baby powder cancer side effects.

Baby Powder Cancer Lawsuits

The baby powder cancer lawsuit accuses Johnson and Johnson of failure to warn, negligence, breach of warranty, and other charges. Karen’s husband also filed for loss of consortium (loss of intimacy with a spouse) because of how baby powder cancer side effects have affected their relationship.

Many baby powder cancer lawsuits have been filed against the company. Johnson & Johnson may be liable for hundreds of thousands of dollars in damages.
