A Florida man has filed a Risperdal lawsuit against Janssen Pharmaceuticals for the personal injuries he allegedly sustained from ingesting the antipsychotic medication.
Plaintiff Saxon W. claims in his Risperdal gynecomastia lawsuit that as a direct result of taking the medication he developed gynecomastia, or male breast growth.
Saxon, currently 18, was prescribed Risperdal around 2008 and used the drug for approximately six years. According to the Risperdal lawsuit, during his time taking the medication, Saxon allegedly experienced significant weight gain and developed male breasts. Saxon also claims he suffered other intense emotional and physical Risperdal side effects including incomplete sexual development and possible diabetes-related symptoms due to his alleged weight gain.
Saxon indicates in the Risperdal lawsuit that Janssen Pharmaceuticals failed to warn him and other Risperdal patients against the severe side effects of the drug. He argues that at no point before or after his prescription did Janssen Pharmaceuticals inform him about the side effect of gynecomastia or any other potential adverse reaction, saying that no warnings were provided on the Risperdal’s label.
Saxon further claims he continues to be affected by Risperdal side effects and may require surgical intervention to remove the excess breast tissue he developed. Saxon is also dealing with the severe trauma from taking Risperdal as the alleged male breast growth caused him to experience extreme humiliation.
Lawyers representing Saxon state that Janssen had the responsibility to provide information about all possible side effects of Risperdal to prescribing patients and had a duty to inform physicians and the medical community about the risks. Saxon insists that he never would have taken Risperdal if he had known about the possibility of developing gynecomastia.
Risperdal Complications
Risperdal was initially approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1993 to treat extreme mental disorders in adult patients such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Its approval was then expanded to treat pediatric and adolescent patients in 2006 for autism and ADHD.
Unfortunately, what makes Risperdal work is also what can cause its side effects. It works by altering the levels of dopamine and serotonin in the brain, but it can also cause a number of complications brought on by the abnormal levels of hormones in the body.
Risperdal side effects include:
- Breast development in boys (gynecomastia)
- Movement disorders
- Diabetes
- Heart problems and death
Risperdal Gynecomastia
Gynecomastia is the enlargement of breast tissue in males, particularly adolescents. Risperdal greatly increases levels of prolactin, a hormone that stimulates production of milk in pregnant women. This increase may be one reason that boys taking these drugs may experience abnormal breast growth.
Risperdal Lawsuits
Over 400 Risperdal lawsuits are pending against Janssen Pharmaceuticals, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson. These Risperdal lawsuits commonly allege that Risperdal caused them to suffer severe personal injuries, with approximately 130 of the Risperdal lawsuits alleging gynecomastia.
The Risperdal Gynecomastia Lawsuit is Case No. 2:14-cv-00529-SPC-CM, in the U.S District Court for the Middle District of Florida, Fort Myers Division.
