Birth Control - Dictionary DefinitionAnother Mirena IUD lawsuit was filed against Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals in January alleging the Mirena IUD device caused severe internal injuries including uterine perforation.

An IUD is an intrauterine device that is commonly used as a form of birth control. It is a small plastic device that is inserted into the uterus by a medical professional every five years. Millions of women across the world have chosen the Mirena IUD as their birth control so they would no longer have to remember to take a daily pill.

However, many women have experienced severe Mirena IUD side effects such as uterine perforation caused by migration. Bayer has been accused of failing to warn about these side effects. The label “does not warn about spontaneous migration of the IUD, but only states that migration may occur if the uterus is perforated during insertion,” according to a recent Mirena IUD lawsuit.

In 2009, a division of the Department of Health and Human Services issued a warning indicating that Bayer was overstating the efficacy and safety of the Mirena IUD in its promotional materials.

Mirena IUD Lawsuit

Plaintiff Megan G. began using the Mirena IUD in February 2014. In June, she discovered that the Mirena IUD had migrated after an ultrasound failed to show the device.

After undergoing laparoscopic surgery, the Mirena IUD was found in the cul-de-sac of her uterus. According to the Mirena IUD lawsuit, this surgery was not only painful and emotionally stressful, but expensive.

Megan and other plaintiffs have allegedly experienced numerous Mirena IUD side effects including “perforation, migration, embedment, ectopic pregnancy, intrauterine pregnancy, cancer, adhesions, cysts, fetal injury, fetal death, early/premature menopause as well as other severe and personal injuries which are permanent and lasting in nature,” according to the Mirena IUD lawsuit.

The Mirena IUD lawsuit also states that Megan and other alleged victims of Mirena IUD side effects may have the need for “lifelong medical treatment” and other forms of monitoring.

The plaintiff asked the court for actual and punitive damages from Bayer in order to pay her medical costs and legal fees, in addition to compensation for the pain and suffering caused by Bayer’s alleged failure to warn against serious Mirena IUD side effects. Megan was also reportedly unable to work and seeks compensation for lost wages as well.

A Mirena IUD class action lawsuit investigation is currently underway.

This Mirena IUD Lawsuit is Case No. 4:15-cv-00046, in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Missouri, Western Division.
