Mirena IUD lawsuitA Mirena IUD complications lawsuit was filed by a North Carolina woman who alleges she suffered serious injuries from using the birth control device.

Plaintiff Nicole H. filed a Mirena IUD lawsuit against Bayer Pharmaceuticals alleging the device had dangerous side effects.

Nicole was prescribed the Mirena IUD when she was looking for a hassle-free birth control, according to the Mirena lawsuit. She started using the Mirena IUD on Jan. 18, 2011, with her medical records stating that the device had implanted successfully, with the plaintiff suffering no initial complications.

A later exam, though, found the IUD perforated and migrated away from her uterus.

After complaining of rectal pressure and pain, a rectal exam was performed that showed the IUD was no longer in the uterus, and the strings were not visible. An ultrasound was conducted after that, which showed that the IUD had embedded itself in her omentum. Lastly, the plaintiff was given a pregnancy test, which was positive.

Due to the severe inconvenience and side effects she endured from the defendant’s medical device, Nicole is taking legal action against Bayer. She claims that in direct result of the allegedly defective product, she found herself with unwanted pregnancy and may have sustained permanent reproductive damage.

Additionally, there were no warnings or indications of how likely it was for the device to perforate and migrate, or the possible damage it could inflict to any children she may have had after using the device. Nicole insists that she never would have used the device if she had known about its design defects, and the possibility of device perforation and migration.

The Mirena lawsuit accuses Bayer of manufacturing, selling, distributing, and marketing a dangerous product as well as negligence, false advertising, concealing information, and misrepresenting a product.

This Mirena IUD Lawsuit is Case No. 2:14-cv-03999-SDW-MCA, in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey.

Overview of Mirena IUD Complications

The Mirena IUD is an intrauterine long-term birth control product, which is directly implanted in the uterus. Ideally, the patient would be able to use the device without complications for five years, because the endpoints of the device would release the synthetic hormones, responsible for pregnancy prevention.

It was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2000, and has since become one of the most popular contraceptive choice for women in the United States, with over 2 million prescribed. The Mirena IUD is manufactured by Bayer Pharmaceuticals, which focused the product’s advertisements on Mirena IUD being a hassle-free contraceptive.

Bayer has been repeatedly criticized for not explicitly mentioning numerous risks on the Mirena IUD label, and for overstating the product’s efficiency.

Thousands of women have filed Mirena IUD lawsuits for the injuries they allegedly suffered from the Mirena IUD perforating and migrating away from their uterus, as well as for any lasting side effects.
