An Actos bladder cancer lawsuit was jointly filed by 14 different plaintiffs in mid-June on behalf of themselves, their spouses, or family members against Takeda Pharmaceuticals International Inc.

This Actos lawsuit alleges the plaintiffs or their loved ones developed bladder cancer sometime after taking Takeda’s type-2 diabetes medication.

Of the 14 plaintiffs, three are filing on behalf of a spouse or family member who allegedly died from Actos bladder cancer, seven are filing jointly as a married couple for loss of consortium after one spouse took Actos and allegedly developed bladder cancer, and the remaining four plaintiffs have filed as individuals to represent their claims against Takeda for their alleged Actos bladder cancer condition.

This specific Actos bladder cancer lawsuit and similar Actos lawsuits currently in litigation claim that the drug’s manufacturer, Takeda, was aware of the high risk of bladder cancer associated with their type-2 diabetes drug, but did not take steps to warn current and future consumers.

Some of the named plaintiffs, like Janette B., only began taking Actos within the last few years. Janette was prescribed Actos by her physician in 2011 to manage her type-2 diabetes condition. However, within a short time frame after she began taking Actos on a daily basis, she allegedly developed Actos bladder cancer and died shortly after.

Other plaintiffs, like Darrold E., began taking Actos as early as 2001, and have since been diagnosed with bladder cancer, allegedly stemming from his use of the Takeda drug. He and his wife have jointly filed the Actos lawsuit against the Japanese drug manufacturer for his pain and suffering and her loss of consortium, allegedly as a result of the Actos bladder cancer condition.

In this Actos lawsuit, all 14 plaintiffs jointly bring several allegations against Takeda, including claims of negligence, failure to warn, defective design, breach of express warranty, breach of implied warranties, fraud and fraudulent concealment, loss of consortium, wrongful death, and violation of consumer protection laws.

The Actos Bladder Cancer Lawsuit is Case No. CIV-14-611-HE, in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Oklahoma.

Possible Actos Side Effects

Aside from the increased risk of bladder cancer, many Actos consumers have reported additional side effects from short and long term use of the diabetic medications.

These Actos side effects include:

  • Chronic kidney disease
  • Congestive heart failure
  • Liver failure
  • Lactic acidosis
  • Bone fracture
  • Rapid and excessive weight gain
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Edema (or fluid retention)

Actos side effects can take anywhere from a few months to a few years to develop in a drug consumer. As demonstrated with the plaintiffs named above, some allegedly began developing Actos bladder cancer soon after taking the type-2 diabetes drug and died shortly after. Others have been taking the Takeda drug for years, and have only recently been diagnosed with bladder cancer.
