According to recent medical studies, the latest generation of blood thinners, including Xarelto and Pradaxa, are not safer than older, more traditional anticoagulant drugs.
In this month’s issue of the Canadian Journal of Cardiology, a group of Ontario-based researchers published findings that suggest Xarelto, Pradaxa, and warfarin (also known as Coumadin) have nearly identical risks of bleeding and other common side effects associated with blood thinning medication commonly prescribed to atrial fibrillation patients.
The Canadian scientists collected data from 901 cardioversion patients and were prescribed either Xarelto, Pradaxa, or warfarin as a blood thinning treatment. The researchers also looked at the number of strokes, transient ischemic events, and bleeding occurrences experienced by patients taking these three drugs.
According to their Xarelto side effects report, given that “Bleeding rates were low, with no significant difference between the groups,” warfarin, Xarelto, and Pradaxa are all reasonable blood thinning prescriptions for patients suffering from atrial fibrillation.
Since their introduction into the North American market, Xarelto and Pradaxa were expected to trump their predecessor warfarin. However, according to recent Xarelto side effects lawsuits and Pradaxa reports, these new anticoagulants may have some dangerous side effects, including uncontrollable bleeding.
However, Pradaxa and Xarelto manufacturers promoted the drugs as a safer alternative to warfarin and claimed patients on these two new anticoagulants did not require as much blood monitoring as warfarin patients to avoid a bleeding incident.
According to additional research, Xarelto and Pradaxa require just as much, if not more, blood monitoring in order to prevent life-threatening bleeding as warfarin. In fact, there have been recent Xarelto lawsuits and Xarelto class action lawsuits alleging several patients have been severely injured or have died as a result of Xarelto side effects.
Xarelto Side Effects
Xarelto is an anticoagulant treatment that, like Pradaxa, is part of the next generation of blood thinning medications described as “direct thrombin inhibitors.” Because of the manufacturer’s claims of decreased need for blood monitoring and other benefits, many doctors have prescribed Xarelto to reduce a patient’s risk of developing strokes and blood clots due to various types of medical conditions, including atrial fibrillation.
Bayer Pharmaceutical and Johnson & Johnson’s drug subsidiary Janssen Pharmaceutical designed and developed Xarelto as a joint business venture. By 2011, Xarelto had gained U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval as an anticoagulant drug treatment and was then introduced to the North American medical community and drug market.
Xarelto was initially well-received by both physicians and patients and was the premier blood thinning treatment for patients who underwent a knee or hip replacement surgery and were later diagnosed with atrial fibrillation. Because of the initial market success, Xarelto was expected to surpass warfarin in terms of anticoagulant drug popularity.
However, over the course of this year, a slew of medical and consumer reports were published, claiming that patients suffered from several dangerous, and often fatal, Xarelto side effects.
Some Xarelto side effects include:
- Deep vein thrombosis
- Pulmonary embolism
- Abdominal bleeding
- Gastrointestinal bleeding
- Brain hemorrhaging
- Abnormal liver function
- Reduced platelet levels
- Dizziness
- Hemorrhaging in the eyes
- Low blood pressure
- Nose bleeds
- Rectal bleeding
- Headache
- Muscle pain
- Rapid heartbeat
- Bruising
- Edema
Many individuals and surviving family members of Xarelto users are now filing Xarelto side effects lawsuits or joining Xarelto class action lawsuits to seek compensation and punitive damages from Bayer and Janssen.
