A string of Unum claim denial lawsuits have been filed against Unum, UnumProvident, or one of their subsidiary companies.
Plaintiffs claim Unum, the disability insurance company, used bad faith insurance practices in order to wrongfully deny benefits owed to plaintiffs.
Unum handles the disability insurance policies of millions of Americans. Unum makes up for nearly half of the disability insurance coverage in the country, but claims that Unum has engaged in unethical insurance practices have been an issue for years.
Allegedly, Unum systematically denied disability insurance claims. Employees claimed that Unum had a monthly quota for claim denials and rewarded claims workers who met their quotas. The employees made this revelation about Unum bad faith insurance practices on a “60 Minutes” episode in 2002.
Also during the television program, a physician claimed he was fired by Unum after he refused to deny people disability health benefits. The physician alleged that he and other physicians were told to falsify health reports to encourage Unum claim denial.
Unum Claim Denial Lawsuits
Unum claim denial lawsuits have been filed across the country. One was filed by a Minnesota resident who was promised long-term disability benefits through his employment at a vacuum sales and service company. Due to severe health problems the man had to stop working in June 2012 and applied and received disability benefits from Unum.
Suddenly, earlier this year, Unum allegedly cancelled his benefits, claiming that he was able to work. The plaintiff argued that this was false and provided medical testimony stating the contrary. With no other options, the plaintiff filed a Unum lawsuit accusing Unum of bad faith insurance practices and wrongful denial of disability benefits.
Another Unum claim denial lawsuit was filed by a former Ohio State University employee. The plaintiff claimed that Unum wrongfully terminated her benefits after little over a month of receiving disability benefits.
The plaintiff appealed the cancellation and provided, according to the Unum lawsuit, adequate medical information that demonstrated she was entitled to long-term Unum disability benefits. Unum allegedly practiced bad faith insurance practices and denied her claims. This resulted in the plaintiff taking legal action.
Thousands of Unum claim denial lawsuits have been filed claiming that disability claims were wrongly rejected. One Unum lawsuit noted that a major conflict of interest existed in the case as Unum both assessed disability information and paid for the disability insurance.
Bad faith insurance practices may lead to wrongful termination of benefits. These practices are of particular note given Unum is the largest disability insurance company in the country. Unum claim denial has reportedly impacted millions of individuals who needed assistance and were allegedly perfectly qualified for disability benefits. A Unum claim denial class action lawsuit investigation has been launched. Several plaintiffs have already won millions of dollars in settlements.
