xolair side effects lawsuitXolair is a common treatment option for those who have allergic asthma, because they cannot use traditional inhalers. However, this asthma treatment option is now under fire from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for allegedly causing various heart complications.

While it is unknown just how high the Xolair blood clotting risk is, the FDA does warn patients and doctors that this product could possibly clot blood in different areas of the body. The FDA recently announced that this information will be added to the drug’s label after analyzing an extensive study, which was submitted to them by the drug’s manufacturer, Genentech.

The study had lasted five years and observed 25 clinical trials comparing the side effects of Xolair to a placebo. In a public statement, Genetech stated that they were working closely with the FDA on updating Xolair to insure the safety of their patients.

Additionally, the company believes that the revision will provide patients and the healthcare community the most accurate information about how to use Xolair.

Despite the extensive study, the FDA stated that this data was not sufficient enough to determine whether or not there is a definite risk. While the data does suggest that Xolair does carry a higher risk of blood clots, the safety study had various limitations that could not conclusively prove the correlation.

This FDA safety update follows a previous statement the agency made in 2009, which said that the FDA was currently evaluating the safety of using Xolair after numerous patients reported a number of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular problems in patients taking Xolair.

As mentioned previously, Xolair is an injectable drug that is meant to be an alternative treatment to inhaled steroids. In addition to mild to moderate asthma, Xolair has also been approved to treat chronic idiopathic urticaria, and a certain type of chronic hives.

Unfortunately, the allegations involving blood clot injuries in the heart and brain have caused massive concern to the public. Patients have filed Xolair lawsuits against Genetech and its parent company, for failing to warn them about the possibility of blood clot injuries.

Despite the warnings, the FDA and medical experts do not recommend that patients stop taking Xolair. Instead, experts encourage patients to have a strong sense of self-awareness and to report to their physician.

Overview of Xolair Complications

The FDA had released a previous Xolair safety warning in 2009 that ultimately led to the most recent Xolair safety update in 2014. The 2009 warning had discussed that Genetech was conducting a five-year study on the safety of Xolair, which resulted in the label update in September.

The update to Xolair’s label described the serious risk of blood clot injuries in the heart and brain, which could result in death in the worst cases.

Medical experts warn patients to visit their doctors if they experience any ill side effects while taking Xolair, and to not ignore any potential signs. The injuries mentioned in Xolair adverse effect reports include:

  • Heart attack
  • Mini-strokes
  • Transient ischemic attacks (TIAs)
  • Sudden, unexpected chest pain
  • Pulmonary hypertension (high blood pressure in the arteries of the lungs)
  • Pulmonary embolism (lung blood clots)
  • Venous thrombosis (vein blood clots)
  • Cancer
