Many individuals have complained of severe complications after using Zithromax (also called Z-Pak). Z-Pak users may have experienced heart attack, Steven Johnson Syndrome (SJS), or liver failure as a result of taking the drug.
Zithromax/Z-Pak lawsuits have been filed, in addition to wrongful death lawsuits for families who claim to have lost a family member due to a Z-Pak heart attack.
Z-Pak Heart Attacks
A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine in May 2012 examined Z-Pak heart attack risks. The study looked at millions of patients in a Tennessee Medicaid cohort. The patients involved in the study included Z-Pak users, non-antibiotic users, and users of other antibiotics such as amoxicillin, ciprofloxacin, and levofloxacin.
They found that there was a definite increase in Z-Pak heart attacks when compared to other antibiotics, especially in the first five days of treatment. In fact, it was suggested that Z-Pak users were twice as likely to suffer from a heart attack compared to amoxicillin users.
Zithromax/Z-Pak is an antibiotic that belongs to a class of drugs called macrolides. Macrolides have been associated with cardiovascular effects, such as the prolonging of QT intervals (which leads to heart attacks).
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) encouraged healthcare professionals to be aware of Z-Pak risks when prescribing it to patients. Z-Pak heart attacks are more common in patients with preexisting heart attack risk. The FDA also requested that healthcare professionals report any adverse side effects.
Z-Pak Steven Johnson Syndrome
SJS is a severe skin disorder that is commonly a reaction to a medication. It begins with a red/purplish rash and develops into severe blistering that essentially causes the skin to burn from the inside out and peel off. Z-Pak is one of the medications that has been linked to SJS cases.
When the infected skin covers more than 10 percent of the body, the condition is called Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (TEN), which is far more dangerous. The skin may peel off in sheets, leaving the body exposed for secondary infections or sepsis (a blood infection). 40 percent of TEN cases are deadly, while SJS is more treatable.
Z-Pak Lawsuits
Allegedly, Zithromax may be responsible for thousands of deaths from heart attacks. Individuals and families that have been affected by Z-Pak side effects have filed Z-Pak lawsuits. As concern and knowledge of heart attack risks and SJS risks grows, Zithromax lawyers expect more lawsuits to be filed. A Z-Pak class action lawsuit investigation is currently underway.
A Z-Pak wrongful death class action lawsuit is an option for family members who have lost someone due to a heart attack, SJS, or another Z-Pak side effect. A Z-Pak class action lawsuit settlement may result in thousands of dollars of victims of Z-Pak side effects.
