uterine myomectomy cancer

Morcellation laparoscopic surgery, a popular method surgeons use to remove uterine fibroids, may be putting the lives of female patients at risk by allegedly spreading cancer cells by hitting and spreading a hidden sarcoma.

As a result, over the course of the last few years, many women have filed morcellation cancer lawsuits or joined morcellation cancer class action lawsuits.

Uterine sarcomas are a rare form of cancer that develop in the uterus lining and are sometimes masked by uterine fibroids. According to several medical studies and morcellation cancer lawsuits, when the morcellator shreds the fibroids to facilitate easy removal, the powered surgical tool may also shred and spread the sarcoma, leading to secondary cancers and the metastasizing of the original cancer, upping it from stage one to stage three in some cases.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has conducted its own studies on the thousands of morcellation cancer claims, and issued a warning to consumers and the medical community about the dangers of using power morcellator tools for fibroid removal and hysterectomy surgeries.

One power morcellator manufacturer, Ethicon, pulled its product off the market after a research study revealed that one in every 350 female patients that had fibroids removed by the morcellation method had a hidden uterine sarcoma.

According to Matthew Johnson, communications director for Ethicon, “While our devices have always carried a warning about the potential spread of cancerous tissue, as new information and questions have begun to arise, there has been growing uncertainty about the potential risk of the procedure. Because there is no consensus in the medical community about the rate of this relatively rare form of cancer that may be spread after morcellation, we elected to suspend sales and then to voluntarily withdraw our devices from the marketplace.”

What is a Morcellator?

A morcellator is a popular powered surgical instrument used in laparoscopic fibroid removal and hysterectomy surgeries. By shredding large masses of tissues, a surgeon can then use perform surgery using a small incision and remove the small pieces of fibroid from the abdominal or pelvic area with minimal invasiveness.

Many women who have undergone a uterus removal or fibroid removal surgery using a morcellator and then developed cancer from a uterine sarcoma that was shredded and spread by the morcellation procedure may have legal options. Thousands of women have already filed morcellator cancer lawsuits or have joined morcellator cancer class action lawsuits against the manufacturers of power morcellator products.
