Pseudotumor cerebri, also called intracranial hypertension, is a serious medical condition that can be caused by birth control pills.
Pseudotumor cerebri is a condition in which excess cerebrospinal fluid builds up in the skull. This creates raised intracranial pressure, which in turn puts pressure on the brain.
Since brain tumors also put pressure on the brain, pseudotumor cerebri causes symptoms that mimic brain tumors. In fact, “pseudotumor cerebri” can be translated from Latin as “fake brain tumor.” Even though pseudotumor cerebri is not a true brain tumor, it is still a serious condition.
Patients with pseudotumor cerebri may experience a variety of increased intracranial pressure symptoms. Increased intracranial pressure symptoms may include dizziness, headache, and nausea. A number of the increased intracranial pressure symptoms cause vision problems, including double vision, blurred vision, and even blindess. One of the most serious potential complications of pseudotumor cerebri is permanent vision loss.
The increased intracranial pressure symptoms associated with vision stem from the fact that the raised intracranial pressure can directly press on the optic nerve, as well as the parts of the brain that handle vision. Physicians have a number of medical and surgical options to treat the intracranial hypertension seen in pseudotumor cerebri. This can include treatments as simple as restrict salt from the diet, all the way up through neurosurgery.
Common surgeries to relieve intracranial hypertension include installing a shunt to drain fluid away from the brain, or lumbar puncture to relieve the pressure. These are complicated surgeries that carry risks.
The exact mechanism behind pseudotumor cerebri remains a mystery, but several risk factors are known. For example, many medications have been known to cause, or are suspected to cause, pseudotumor cerebri. This includes many common types of birth control pills. Birth control pills are at the top of Medline’s list of drugs that can cause intracranial hypertension and pseudotumor cererbri.
A class action lawsuit investigation has been launched to explore the possibility of legal action over the alleged link between pseudotumor cerebri and common birth control pills. Similar past lawsuits against drug makers have made the allegation that drug makers were aware of the potential for serious side effects but marketed drugs anyway, downplaying the risks and endangering patients. Lawsuits of this type typically seek to recoup medical expenses, lost wages, and legal fees associated with the side effects victims have allegedly suffered.
