Risperdal Lawsuit

A Florida resident has filed Risperdal gynecomastia lawsuit against Janssen Pharmaceuticals Inc., the maker of the antipsychotic drug Risperdal, alleging that he suffered unnatural male breast growth after consuming its antipsychotic drug.

Plaintiff Saxon Warboys, 18, was prescribed Risperdal for the first time around 2007 or 2008 when he was about 11 or 12, and continued to take Risperdal until 2011 or 2012.

Warboys claims in his Risperdal lawsuit to have experienced a number of Risperdal side effects while taking the antipsychotic medication, including significant weight gain, enlarged nipples, and enlarged male breasts, otherwise known as gynecomastia. These symptoms did not go away after he stopped taking Risperdal.

According to the Risperdal gynecomastia lawsuit, “Saxon Warboys has continued to experience negative effects from his use of Risperdal from 2007/2008 to 2011/2012, including gynecomastia, delayed and/or incomplete sexual development, impaired motor skills, dyssomnia, eneuresis, diabetes and/or diabetes-related symptoms, and other physical health issues and emotional disturbances.”

In light of these allegations, Warboys has filed this gynecomastia lawsuit against Johnson & Johnson’s subsidiary Janssen pharmaceuticals.

Warboys has lodged several claims against Janssen in this Risperdal lawsuit, including negligence, breach of express warranty, strict product liability, fraudulent concealment, failure to warn, negligent misrepresentation, negligent infliction of emotional distress, and intention infliction of emotional distress.

Warboys is seeking economic and non-economic damages, compensatory and punitive damages, and payment of attorney’s fees.

Saxon Warboys is not the only Risperdal consumer that has filed a Risperdal lawsuit. Many young men across the country who allegedly developed gynecomastia from their use of Risperdal have filed Risperdal lawsuits or joined Risperdal gynecomastia lawsuits.

The Risperdal Gynecomastia Lawsuit is Warboys v. Ortho-McNeil-Janssen Pharmaceuticals Inc., et al., Case No. 2:14-cv-00529-SPC-CM, in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida, Fort Myers Division.

What is Risperdal?

Risperidone (or Risperdal) is a second generation, atypical, antipsychotic medication. In 1993, Janssen with the help of Johnson & Johnson, introduced this drug to the medical community for the first time. Since then, thousands of individuals suffering from schizophrenia, bipolar mania, and autistic disorder have benefited from taking Risperdal.

Risperdal is designed to block dopamine so as to manage certain mental disorders. In response, an individual’s pituitary gland may release prolactin, which stimulates milk production and causes men to develop enlarged male breasts or gynecomastia.

What is Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia is a common condition found in adolescent boys when the male breasts become unnaturally enlarged. This can occur naturally when an individual’s body does not product enough testosterone.

However, recent studies and consumer reports have found that adolescent males using Risperdal have a higher rate of developing gynecomastia. Additionally, many of these young men allegedly did not have a high risk of developing gynecomastia before consuming the antipsychotic drug.

While gynecomastia is physically benign, it is the source of great psychological stress for young men and may lead to issues with body image and body acceptance.

Some symptoms of gynecomastia include:

  • Nipple discharge
  • Tenderness in the breast area
  • Pain in breast tissue
  • Swelling of breast tissue and nipples

As a result of the various emotional, psychological and physical gynecomastia side effects of Risperdal, many young men have filed or will file a Risperdal gynecomstia lawsuit.

In general, Risperdal lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.
